City seeks donations for pound improvements; none given so far

The city of Chiefland has received no donations from its appeal to residents to make improvements at the municipal animal shelter.

Staff placed the appeal for donations on its website after two Chiefland women addressed city commissioners at the March 27 meeting. Patty Pastore said Monday she and Denise Bariteau will attend the April 10 meeting at 6 p.m.

Pastore asked the Commission at the last meeting to help change the conditions at the city pound and to convert to a no-kill rescue instead of euthanizing animals. She presented a list of 240 names to commissioners that she collected in four days from customers at the NAPA store where she works at the front counter.

“The names are of people who don’t even know where the pound is. Those are people who have been living here all their lives and that’s just the start,” she said. “The building is very old. There’s no heat or air and there is no place for them to get out into the sunlight. All I’m asking is if we can give the dogs a second chance; that we can do something more than we’ve been doing for years and years and years.”
