City makes formal request for county ALS workshop

Chiefland is moving forward in its pursuit of advanced life support (ALS) status from the county.

Chiefland commissioners voted 4-1 Monday in favor of sending a letter to county commissioners formally requesting a workshop on the matter, an issue county officials have claimed to be the first step in potentially granting such a request.

Chiefland officials say ALS is important for the city because the drugs and equipment that it would allow emergency personnel to use would save lives while having to wait for an ambulance — something the county is in short supply of. Officials had a city workshop where members of the public were invited last week.

The general sentiment expressed by the public in attendance was that ALS was necessary.

County Commissioner Ryan Bell, attending the workshop as a member of the public, was asked what the hold up was. He said he had yet to see an official letter signed by the mayor of Chiefland requesting a workshop with the county.

Mayor Teal Pomeroy cast the only dissenting vote on the letter Monday night, saying he was in favor of ALS, though he had questions and was "uniformed."
