City looks at plan to clean up park

-A A +A

Could cost as much as $6,500

Chiefland city commissioners say something needs to be done about problems at a local park, but they're not sure where the money to fix the problems will come from.

The problems — drugs, prostitution, loud and profane music and generally unsafe conditions at Eddie Buie Recreational Park — were highlighted by resident Paul Yatsko at the commissioners' June 13 meeting.

"It's dangerous even for police officers to go to," Yatsko said, pleading for the commission do something about the problems that he said have plagued the park for years. It was not the first time Yatsko had asked the commission to do something.

So, commissioners asked city officials and staff to look into the matter and come up with a plan.

At Monday night's regular meeting, City Manager Grady Hartzog said a solution had been found.

A 6-foot-high fence would need to be constructed around the front of the park, he said. This would help deter criminals from using the park because it would make it harder for them to escape law enforcement, Hartzog said.
