Chiefland woman reaches out to Alabama tornado victims

By Mark Scohier, Staff writer

Amanda Cannon’s eyes teared up as she described her most recent drive to Hackleburg, a small town in the northwest corner of Alabama.
It was beautiful at first, she said. The countryside was full of blooming flowers, green fields and leafy trees. Then, as she, her husband and two children drove nearer to the town, the scene began to change.
“It was complete devastation,” she said about the town that was torn up by tornadoes just weeks ago. Trees had been reduced to stumps. Hundreds of cars were strewn about, and there were even school busses dropped by the devastating twisters on the tops of schools.
“You see it on the news, but it’s way worse.”
Cannon said the town’s infrastructure was completely destroyed. Schools, churches, government buildings, homes, businesses, daycares and even gas stations were all wiped out. There’s no electricity or phone service, and people are mostly living under tarps, she said.
“There are 1,500 people without a place to live.”
