Chiefland reverses itself on insurance

Bids to be sought

By Lou Elliott Jones, Editor

The Chiefland City Commission reversed itself and will put the city’s insurance business up for bid, just one month after deciding it would not do so and reaffirmed Michael Michaelis of Don Martin Insurance Agency as the city’s agent.

The 5-0 vote in Monday’s meeting came after Bill Erwin of Erwin Insurance Agency, sitting in a chair at the back of the commission room, complained to the commission about the arrangement.

In taking up the non-agenda item without a vote to do so, the commission also rejected a suggestion from Commissioner Theresa Barron that the matter be placed on the next meeting agenda. Mayor Teal Pomeroy voiced his distaste for being “in a room full of insurance agents,” on a bid.

The original discussion on the city’s insurance came up a month ago while City Manager Grady Hartzog was on personal leave and Hartzog’s proposal on that agenda called for putting the insurance out for bid. It was rejected 4-1, with Commissioner Rollin Hudson dissenting, in favor of continuing the eight-year business deal with Michaelis.
