Chiefland hopes to work with county on fire funding

Looks deeper at establishing fire assessment

By Mark Scohier, Staff writer

The Chiefland City Commission agreed by consensus Monday night that it would continue, at least once more, to try to work with the county on issues related to the funding and certification needs of Chiefland Fire and Rescue.

City officials are considering levying a city-wide fire assessment to cover costs to run the fire department, instead of relying so heavily on money from the county.

Newly elected Commissioner and ex mayor Betty Walker said she, personally, would like to talk to county representatives once more in seeking what CFR is asking for.

The fire department does good work, Walker said, but its representatives need to slow down a bit.

"I know time is of the essence with you," Walker told CFH Chief James Harris, "'cause you're one of them go-getters."

Still, she asked that negotiations be allowed to continue.
