Chiefland Citizen turns green

John Jones has always been from the "waste not, want not" school.

Working in the Chiefland Citizen's press room/mail room the past four years, Jones noticed that most of the trash bin's contents was newspaper.

Some of it was waste from press run starts, some of it was old papers, some out of town papers.

It all added up to a lot.

"I kept seeing all this paper not being recycled,"said the 70-year-old Chiefland resident. "I kept asking why we didn?t recycle. I heard that no one wanted it. I talked to (Chiefland Citizen Publisher) Dale (Bowen) and talked to him about all this paper being thrown away. He agreed it would be a good thing to recycle."

After a few calls and dead ends, Jones hooked up with the folks out at the Levy County Landfill. Johnnie Pendarvis came out and detemined that there was a definite need . A half-trailer would fit behind the building located on Park Street.

The trailer first arrived Dec. 6.

"They pick it up on Wednesdays," Jones said. "It's been filled up every week."

Co-workers John Helgesson, Billy Roberson and Bob McCarthy have been happy to become part of the recycling team.
