The three-time state champion Chiefland Indians softball team and the reigning state finalist Chiefland baseball club break out the bats starting this week for a couple of preseason tournaments.

The softball team is at Dixie County (Cross City) Thursday and Friday, Feb. 9 and 10. The Indians face Newberry at 5 p.m. Thursday, before taking on Bell at the same time on Friday.

The baseball team hosts a three-day preseason classic next week in Chiefland. Dixie County and Wildwood start it off Monday, Feb. 13, at 4 p.m. Chiefland then faces Gainesville Saint Francis at 7 p.m. On Thursday, Feb. 16, Bronson plays the Bears at 7 p.m. That Friday, Feb. 17, Bronson and Saint Francis meet at 4 p.m., before the Indians and Wildcats cap it all off at 7 p.m.

The CMHS softball team is coming off a 28-1 campaign and its third straight Class 1A state championship. The Indians lose three starters from that club, but return six seniors, including All-American shortstop Takiya London and another handful of college signees. London will miss Thursday’s game due to basketball.

The Indian baseball program will have to rebuild from its state finals appearance last spring, as it loses a majority of its starting lineup and most of its innings from the pitching rotation from the 2016 club.

Chiefland baseball opens the regular season at home on Feb. 20 against Bronson. The softball team is at Taylor County (Perry) Feb. 17 for its opener.
