Cheer camp is hard work

Like a lot of sports teams, cheerleaders don't escape the rigors of summer camp.

The girls have to do reps, learn new techniques and work up a sweat to ensure a smooth showing on Friday nights.

Twenty Chiefland High cheerleaders prepared for the coming school year by participating in a three-day camp held last week at a steamy Chiefland Middle School gym.

The girls worked hard on perfecting stunts and routines for six hours each day.

Jenny Sagadraca and Stephany Maldonado of the UCA Association came to town to run the camp.

"The girls learned a lot of skills," said CHS varsity coach Melodie Irizarry. "They learned new ways to do stunts. They learned to be a team. At first there was some whining, but they persevered."

"They learned practical cheers that the crowd can respond to, " added CHS junior varsity coach Julie Gerhard.

"It was really hard," said junior varsity cheerleader Lynn Bolton. "We learned a lot."

"They (Jenny and Stephany) pushed us and made us better," said fellow JV cheerleader Natasha Rana. "We know so much more."

It should be fun. Let the cheering begin.
