The Levy County Commission races are starting to heat up even though the primary is not until Aug. 26. And the school board races have attracted at least one incumbent candidate.

In the commission District 2 race incumbent Commissioner Chad “Cracker” Johnson, of Chiefland, an auctioneer,  will face county employee Russell “Rock” Meeks of Chiefland in the Republican primary.

The commission District 4 race will be a replay of the 2010 race when Commission Chair Ryan Bell of Chiefland unseated Commissioner Lillian “Lilly” Rooks of Rosewood. Bell owns a foodservice company and franchises the BubbaQue's restaurants. Rooks is a health care administrator at Ayers Rehabilitation Center in Trenton.

In the District 1 School Board race incumbent Cameron Asbell of Bronson has filed his papers. The race is non partisan.

Other countywide races include school board Districts 3 and 5.  The District 5 seat is held by Rick Turner of Williston and the District 3 seat held by Robert Philpot of Williston.

The deadline for qualifying is June 20.
