Bus, drug incidents drive school board meeting

-A A +A
By Mike Capshaw, Staff Writer

Personnel issues involving two bus drivers and a custodian consumed Tuesday's three-plus hour School Board of Levy County meeting.
The board also called an Aug. 2 public hearing to discuss policy changes, including the adoption of the "baggy pants law," recently approved by Florida legislators.
Conjecture during a grievance hearing for fired bus driver Lillie Law caused the biggest stir among board members and others in attendance. The hearing for Law, who was terminated during an April 5 special board meeting, was the third step in the process before the issue is moved into binding arbitration. Law was represented by Patricia A. Draper, a Tallahassee attorney working with the Florida Education Association.
The incident involved Law removing a fourth-grade student, referred to as "L.M.," from her Williston bus on Jan. 11. Draper said the student had a past history of "violent altercations" and that Law did what she had to do to keep herself and other students safe.
