Bronson: New garbage bid smells good

-A A +A
By Mark Scohier, Staff writer

Bronson’s long-time waste removal contractor Waste Pro was dumped in a shaky 4-1 decision by the town council Monday night.

After about an hour of discussion and proposals from representatives of Waste Pro and two other companies that bid on the contract, Council Member Berlon Weeks made a motion to go with Gainesville-based Waste Corporation of America, the lowest bidder.

Weeks’ motion died for lack of a second until audience member Edith Brown stood up and told Mayor Franklin Schuler and the council, “You’re wrong if you do anything other than the lowest bid.”

Weeks made the motion again, which, after a pause, was seconded by Council member Jason Kennedy. Council Member Beatrice Roberts dissented, but her one vote wasn’t hefty enough to keep Waste Pro from being hauled out to the curb.

Weeks said WCA’s bid will save each household about $67 a year.

During the discussion, council members asked representatives from each company several questions dealing with the types of trucks used, the number of men on each truck, choice of landfills, employees and community involvement.
