More than four decades ago, civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in Memphis, Tenn. Since his death, the Nobel Peace Prize winner has become an American icon for people wishing to look ahead in making the U.S. a better place to live.

Monday, Bronson officials voted unanimously to honor King with the addition of street signs designating Main Street as Martin Luther King Jr. Street.

The request came from Bronson resident Katherine Manuel.

"Our sister towns have celebrations for Martin Luther King. They also have streets named for Martin Luther King," Manuel told the council, adding that many streets and buildings in Bronson were named after people who did good things. Manuel said it's about time Bronson did the same for King. The council agreed.

Town Attorney Steven Warm said he would write an official ordinance on the matter to be approved by council.

In other matters:

The council voted unanimously to increase Bronson Fire Chief Jeff DiMaggio's salary by $200 a month, totaling $8,400 a year.
