A column of gray smoke swirled over part of Bronson Wednesday as firefighters from several area departments fought and squelched a grass fire about a ½ mile north of the Levy County Sheriff’s Office along Northeast 80th Avenue.

“They were able to get here in just enough time to control it,” Levy County Department of Public Safety Capt. Clayton Drew said of firefighters from the Florida Forest Service Williston, Bronson and county fire departments.

The fire, according to drew, started in three small patches of dry grass along the road and then, with the aid of the wind, quickly spread to an adjacent field, burning about three acres of grass and planted pines. Drew said the call came in to dispatch a few minutes after 1 p.m., and crews had the fire contained by about 1:30 p.m.

Nobody was hurt in the blaze. Drew said it’s not known what caused the fire, though, he added, it’s being investigated by the Florida Dorest Service.
