Cooksey's certification in question

By Jenna McKenna

Back in May, Bronson football head coach Al Cooksey was one of several coaches district-wide who found out his job was in jeopardy because his temporary teaching certification was about to expire. Cooksey, who received his temporary certification in April 2007, thought he had until April 2010 to complete coursework for his permanent license. However, Levy County Schools Director of Personnel Candy Dean says that, because Cooksey began teaching at Hilliard High School in April 2007, his temporary certification is back-dated to the beginning of the 2006-2007 school year, which means his temporary permit expired on June 30.

Since he learned of the problem, Cooksey says he has been working overtime to get his needed classes and in-service points completed so that he'll be back in compliance. Nevertheless, as of last week, the district had advertised his position – physical education instructor and head football coach – on the employment portion of the website.

“We've had a few candidates submit applications already,” Dean said.
