Bo Diddley remembered

By Claude Lewis

Levy County Commissioner Tony Parker has always believed Bo Diddley never got enough recognition in his home county.

The rock 'n roll music pioneer died at the age of 79 on June 2.

"He was well known around the world," Parker said. "He was bigger in a lot of places than here."

Here would be Levy County.

"His mailing address was Archer, but he really lived in Levy," Parker said.

"It's true," Diddley's grandson, Gary Mitchell, said. "It's one of those strange things where he had an Archer mailing address but a Bronson phone number. He was 10 miles from Archer and five miles from Bronson."

Born in Mississippi, Diddley resided in many places during his storied career, but he spent his final 30 some years in northeast Levy.

Perhaps a reason why Diddley wasn't as big in these parts was because he liked to lay low when he came home to relax after long tours.

"He carried himself like a normal citizen," Mitchell said. "He wasn't wearing the clothes he wore onstage. You wouldn't recognize him. He'd shop at the Wal-Mart in Chiefland. He fished at Cedar Key. We did things as a family."
