  • No score, no problem

    Neither team left with a victory in the Blue and Gold. It was still a win for Chiefland football.
    Chiefland High School’s annual showcase scrimmage was unlike any other in recent memory. Head coach Aaron Richardson decided not to divide up the team in the traditional manner. Instead of pitting players as part of a full-time “Blue” or “Gold” team, players switched back and forth between teams, some after nearly every series. There was no clock or score for the game. This first-year coach said this system was meant to build team unity.

  • Annual Rotary fishing tournament...

    The Chiefland Rotary Club will host its annual fishing tournament this weekend in Cedar Key. The event begins with a mandatory captains’ meeting on Friday at 6 p.m. at the Cedar Key Community Center. Anglers have until weigh-ins at 4 p.m on Saturday to catch the biggest fish.

    Recent fishing restrictions in the Gulf of Mexico limit the competition haul to five trout and two redfish total.

    First place for biggest trout and biggest redfish can earn up to $500 in prize money.

  • Bronson Youth League Equipment...

    No equipment is missing from the Bronson Youth League, according to organization representative Mike Hanna. An unidentified audience member from a Bronson Council meeting on April 16 said she saw items with the B.Y.L label at Play it Again Sports, a used sporting goods franchise. Hanna said he went to both the Gainesville and Ocala locations and didn’t find anything from the league. 

    An investigation by The Chiefland Citizen into the Gainesville location provided similar results.

  • Boating education may lower...

    WASHINGTON — The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary offers two courses that may qualify for insurance company discounts that are designed to enhance skills and knowledge for the recreational boat operator as well as personal watercraft, canoe and kayakers.  Students can enroll in a one day basic class or an advanced knowledge and seamanship course that covers 12 chapters of instruction.  Regardless of the course, a boater education certification card will be issued after successfully completing the test.

  • FWC sets Red Snapper Season

    The 2012 recreational red snapper season in Gulf of Mexico state waters will be June 1 through July 10, a total of 40 days.

    The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) set the 2012 season Wednesday, May 2, at the Commission meeting in Crystal River.

  • Trickling River Doesn't...

    John Edwards, clad in Spandex shorts and a torn T-shirt adorned with an airbrushed hog in a canoe, smiled as paddled down the tea colored waters of the Waccasassa River, effortlessly hefting his thin frame over the fallen log at the end of the race he’s competed in for 34 years.

    “It’s a fun race to do,” the St. Petersburg resident said after coming in first Saturday in the Experienced Class division of the 35th Annual Wild Hog Canoe & Kayak Race in Otter Creek.

  • Chiefland Baseball Falls in...

    The 2012 Chiefland High School baseball team faced a lot of challenges during their season. The most important turned out to be a two-run lead in the bottom of the seventh. 

    The Indians left the go-ahead run at the plate in the top of the seventh inning in their District 1A-7 semi-final game against Newberry. The loss ended a season that saw the Indians take a difficult beginning and turn it into an above-.500 record.

    Chiefland softball player Taylore Fuller is one of the select few athletes that will get to compete at the varsity level in college. A year from now she will be wearing Orange and Blue, playing for the University of Florida.

  • Wain's World

    It may not have been the biggest senior class in Chiefland High School baseball history, but it, or he, went out with a bang in the team's final home game.
    Travis Wain, the only senior on the roster, earned the win by pitching four innings in Chiefland's 5-2 win against Seven Rivers Christian School on April 17. It wasn't the Indian's smoothest victory but it continued the home team's winning ways.  Chiefland has won eight of its last nine games.
