  • Indians beat Eagles in their nest

Indian fans filled the bleachers at the Bronson gym Saturday as Chiefland boys beat the Eagles 49-45, holding off overtime, it seemed, by the breath in a referee's whistle.

Cantrell Richardson got the Indians off to a good start, taking the dish from Josh Wasson for a three off the left wing. Wasson was fouled on his next trip and made two free throws, making it 5-0 Chiefland before James Rivers got to the line for Bronson, making two.

  • Levy County Raiders football...

Levy County Raiders traveled to Belleview to face a much-improved Belleview team in the Sonic Holiday Invitational Bowl. The Black Knights came into the game hoping to avenge a 27-0 defeat received a few weeks ago at the hands of the Raiders, but it was not to be, as Levy County again shut them out, 34-0.

  • Indians clawed by Panthers

Chiefland boys looked sluggish in a mostly close 50-39 loss to district rival Newberry Friday. Expectations were high for the Indians after a breakout game against ranked rival Williston, which Chiefland lost only after putting a bad scare into the slumping Devils.

  • Indians go Bear hunting

The Indians are going Bear hunting! CHS had a pep rally Wednesday to get fired up for Chiefland's Friday home game against tough district rival Dixie County. Basketball Head Coach Mark Lundy told the crowd that the Indians are currently tied with the Bears for third in the district, which also includes conference leaders P.K. Yonge and Williston. If Chiefland beats Dixie Friday, the Indians would take over third place and improve their seeding for the district tournament, which starts in February.

  • CHS girls defend, don't...

Chiefland girls had another tough outing against district foe P.K. Yonge, to whom they also lost in the first half of the season. The Lady Wave brought their fullcourt trapping defense into Chiefland Thursday, along with deadeye shooting by Jaterra Bonds and Niya Johnson, and left with a 65-18 win.

Katelyn Allen led Lady Indian scoring with six points and Renashia Bowers and Janessa Barrios followed with four points each.

The Lady Indians played much better the following night against Dixie County, falling 39-33 after nearly recovering from a 20-9 first half deficit.

  • New district slot a good fit for...

The tentative realignments of football districts and classifications by the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) looks favorable for the Chiefland, as the Indians move down to Class 1A District 5. Schools are assigned to classifications by population, and to districts by geography, and Chiefland High School now falls into a smaller population category.

Chiefland football head coach Ajay Ulmer likes the Indians' chances in the new district to which they've tentatively been assigned.

  • Beckham's Canes come close...

Former Bronson basketball head coach Kelly Beckham took his Gainesville Hurricanes to the Tampa Hoops Classic last week, beating Oak Ridge (Tenn.) 64-49 and Thomas Jefferson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) 70-52 to ride the tournament bracket into the third round. At press time, the Canes were set to face Orlando Olympia in the semifinal, Olympia having beaten Tampa Berkeley Prep 69-64 and Clearwater 65-44.
