This year in sports saw extraordinary achievement, obstacles overcome and once-in-a-lifetime luck. It also saw the saddest sports story we’ve ever had to print – the untimely death at age 54 of beloved Sports Editor Claude Lewis. Lewis was on his way to watch Chiefland football play Hamilton County, and never got to see that game. He was succeeded by veteran sportswriter Jenna McKenna, but he can never be replaced.

After a disruptive power outage killed the lights and the rhythm of the game, Chiefland boys needed patience and persistence to get the upper hand on Ft. White Thursday, though did, at last. Finally breaking open the fourth quarter, the Indians in blue downed the red team 56-42.

“It's a district win and we'll take it,” said Chiefland head coach Mark Lundy.

With leading scorer James Rivers still out of action, nursing a sore ankle, the Bronson Eagles took the sting out of the Lafayette Mayo Hornets on Friday night Dec. 19, and flew to a 73-56 win before a half filled gym in Bronson.

The Eagles took their first lead as the first quarter came to an end 14-12. The Hornets continued to keep pace with the Eagles and trailed by just three points, thanks to a 3-point basket by Antwan Brown as the first half ended with the Eagles leading 27-24.

The Lafayette Mayo Hornets ladies basketball team jumped out to a quick 19-5 lead over the Bronson Lady Eagles and never looked back. The lady Hornets had well over 25 take-a-ways in the game and turned most of them into easy baskets. The Lady Hornets put the game into the running clock rule as they took a 52-18 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Each team managed to score five points each in the final quarter as the Hornets held the ball running time off the clock for the 57-23 win.

Carttasha Macklin had 22 points for the Hornets and Sunshine Reid added 16 points.
