  • Eagles take sting out of Hornets

    With leading scorer James Rivers still out of action, nursing a sore ankle, the Bronson Eagles took the sting out of the Lafayette Mayo Hornets on Friday night Dec. 19, and flew to a 73-56 win before a half filled gym in Bronson.

    The Eagles took their first lead as the first quarter came to an end 14-12. The Hornets continued to keep pace with the Eagles and trailed by just three points, thanks to a 3-point basket by Antwan Brown as the first half ended with the Eagles leading 27-24.

  • Bronson plays tough, but falls...

    In perhaps the most aggressive and skillful play that the Lady Eagles have faced this season, Bronson held their own in the first half of the soccer match last week against the Fort White Indians, losing in the second half 2-0.

  • Lady Eagles feel the sting

    The Lafayette Mayo Hornets ladies basketball team jumped out to a quick 19-5 lead over the Bronson Lady Eagles and never looked back. The lady Hornets had well over 25 take-a-ways in the game and turned most of them into easy baskets. The Lady Hornets put the game into the running clock rule as they took a 52-18 lead at the end of the third quarter.

    Each team managed to score five points each in the final quarter as the Hornets held the ball running time off the clock for the 57-23 win.

    Carttasha Macklin had 22 points for the Hornets and Sunshine Reid added 16 points.

  • Women's Golf

    On Dec. 17, the Chiefland Ladies Golf Association had 18 golfers play, in three member, blind draw teams. The best front nine and the best back nine scores were chosen out of the three totals. An average of all three handicaps was then deducted to determine the low net winning scores.

  • Turnovers a factor as Lady...

    Still looking for answers, Chiefland girls fell 49-36 to Ft. White Thursday. They suffered from turnovers and struggled for three quarters to put the ball in the hoop, so that even a gonzo fourth quarter couldn't save them.

    “We're just not making easy shots,” said head coach Emily Gore.

  • Uniform crisis threatens...

    If someone doesn't help, Chiefland basketball is in for a tough season.

    Last month, the Chiefland Citizen reported a break-in at the Chiefland High School athletic department, and the theft of some uniforms and equipment. The brief report didn't begin to touch on the loss. The football and basketball programs lost, between them, almost $27,000 in vital gear.

  • Indians chop Tigers, get tossed...

    Chiefland boys got off to a great start last Monday with a 61-48 win over Trenton, but slipped a bit the next night, losing to Interlachen 68-64 in overtime.

    The Indians had a great preseason showing, winning both of their games in Williston's Tip-Off Tournament. The away game at Trenton was the first of the regular season, and the Indians played crisply and won easily.

  • Lady Indians struggle against...

    In their season-opening five-point loss to district rival Williston, Chiefland girls played a solid game, leading for a half and putting on a good late rally despite a third quarter collapse. Chiefland looked flat and out of sync Tuesday in an all-over-the-place 48-33 loss at Trenton. An early lead against Williston had allowed them to play with composure; against Trenton, though, their composure was sorely tested, starting, no doubt, with a 17-point first quarter deficit from which they really never recovered.

  • Bronson boys whip short-staffed...

    “Enjoy the win, but keep it in perspective,” said Bronson basketball head coach Aaron Haldeman after his team after beating Newberry 50-34 this past Monday.

    It was the Eagles' home opener, and an expected win; however, the Panthers were still playing football and their squad was depleted accordingly.

    “I think their coach told me he had one varsity regular on the floor,” Haldeman said.

    “Other than that, it was a JV team.”

  • Free throws make the difference...

    When you take the emotion out of a big rivalry and boil it down to the bare facts, Williston's 61-43 win over Chiefland last Friday comes down to one raw number.

    Chiefland lost by 18 points. Chiefland missed 17 free throws.

    The Red Devils pulled out to a 38-19 halftime lead, then withstood a Chiefland rally in the second half to get the win.

    Chiefland coach Mark Lundy approved of his team's effort. "We cut it to (13). I was really pleased that the team did not give up."
