  • Bronson’s Rivers bound...

James Rivers was one of Bronson basketball's Super Sophs, the little team that could, the squad of sleepers that came out of nowhere to storm all the way to the Class 2A Sweet Sixteen in 2007. This is the team that " remember? - in the first week of November suddenly found out the starting five that was going to take them through the region was out. Suddenly, then-head coach Kelly Beckham was looking at starting a pair of sophomores at the point and small forward " two guys who lit up JV last year, yeah, but were they ready to deal with Oak Hall, Mayo and Hawthorne?

  • Emily Gore

Though they're sad she'd gone, her supporters are glad Emily Gore has landed on her feet. Chiefland High School's varsity volleyball, girls' basketball and girls' track coach was one of many who lost her teaching contract this spring. A Chiefland native and athletic star in her own school days, Gore's local impact was significant as a coach and teacher, and her players and team supporters hated to see her go. “Wherever I end up, I never want to coach against Chiefland,” she told her players at her going-away party last month.

  • Football workouts will make...

Chiefland football is getting bigger, one run, one lift, one pound at a time. Indians' head football coach Ajay Ulmer reports that summer workouts have been well attended and attitudes are strong.

“We've had some guys make some really great gains this summer,” he said.

“We've got some really strong freshmen coming up too.”

Monday was a max-out day in the weight room, with players having this week to hit their target lifts in the bench, squat and power clean.

Maybe it wasn't a lifelong dream, but it sure felt like it. Chiefland Citizen and Williston Pioneer photographer Dave Colón recently completed his first marathon, the big race that all runners dream of. It was the culmination of 10 years of learning and running, and, he hopes, the beginning of a long and wonderful adventure.

  • Mitchell's camp a thrill...

Big Mo Mitchell showed once again why he was the terror of the Southeastern Conference last week, as he completed pass after pass with defenders hanging off him. Mitchell, a former University of Florida offensive lineman and current Bronson football assistant coach, nevertheless took the snaps and drove his team forward against upstart challenger Jake Williams, a defensive menace on last year's Bronson Eagle squad.
