Chiefland girls had another tough outing against district foe P.K. Yonge, to whom they also lost in the first half of the season. The Lady Wave brought their fullcourt trapping defense into Chiefland Thursday, along with deadeye shooting by Jaterra Bonds and Niya Johnson, and left with a 65-18 win.

Katelyn Allen led Lady Indian scoring with six points and Renashia Bowers and Janessa Barrios followed with four points each.

The Lady Indians played much better the following night against Dixie County, falling 39-33 after nearly recovering from a 20-9 first half deficit.

Former Bronson basketball head coach Kelly Beckham took his Gainesville Hurricanes to the Tampa Hoops Classic last week, beating Oak Ridge (Tenn.) 64-49 and Thomas Jefferson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) 70-52 to ride the tournament bracket into the third round. At press time, the Canes were set to face Orlando Olympia in the semifinal, Olympia having beaten Tampa Berkeley Prep 69-64 and Clearwater 65-44.

Day One

Chiefland vs. Interlachen

It took two overtimes to do it, but Chiefland boys finally got the upper hand for a 66-63 win over Interlachen, a streaky team that put the Indians down the first week of the season. Chiefland's defensive hustle kept them in the game even when their turnovers threatened to give it away. For every giveaway on the offensive end, the Indians grabbed a pick at the other end. When it counted, they finally shut the door.

Bronson vs. West Shore

Fans of Chiefland football must have hollered on the day after Christmas when, with 10:16 left in the Motor City Bowl against Central Michigan, Florida Atlantic QB Rusty Smith drilled the football into the arms of CHS alum Cortez Gent as he stepped into the left end zone. It was the insurance TD for the Owls, who'd come back from an opening deficit against the favored Chippewas and would go on to win 24-21.
