Chiefland baseball was like a heavy spear last year – strong hitting in support of heavyweight pitchers Ory Pitts and Daniel Galpin. The Indians were 18-3 going into districts when the unthinkable happened – they were eliminated in a loss to a P.K. Yonge team they'd beaten twice already.

Head Coach Kyle Parnell remembers it well.

“We lost 2-0,” he said.

“Ory pitched well. We just didn't generate any runs.”

Still, last year's was a good group, he recalls.

The steam coming off the players on the 38-degree diamond is a pretty good indication that, if energy counts, Chiefland softball is going to have another good year. Like last year, the Lady Indians play in the brutal District 5 of Class 3A, where the competition includes perennial local power Williston as well as Ft. White and P.K. Yonge. Last year, neither Chiefland nor Williston made it out of the district tournament, an occurrence so rare some folks ran to the weather channel to see if it was snowing in certain warmer locales.

Indian fans filled the bleachers at the Bronson gym Saturday as Chiefland boys beat the Eagles 49-45, holding off overtime, it seemed, by the breath in a referee's whistle.

Cantrell Richardson got the Indians off to a good start, taking the dish from Josh Wasson for a three off the left wing. Wasson was fouled on his next trip and made two free throws, making it 5-0 Chiefland before James Rivers got to the line for Bronson, making two.
