  • Indians thrash Tigers, get ready...

    After a painful home loss to Bronson, Chiefland boys were ecstatic to get back to pounding Trenton 61-28 Thursday night for Senior Night. The rebuilding Tigers were again without big man Trevor Pelphrey, leaving do-it-all senior C.J. Bowers to, well, do it all. The Indians keyed on Bowers and held him to six points on the night. Julian Langley stepped up for Trenton with a team-high nine points.

    “I understand Trenton is in a rebuilding process,” said Chiefland Head Coach Mark Lundy.

  • Indians put the fear into Devils

    Chiefland needed a perfect game to beat Williston in basketball, but perfection's not a dog that comes when you call. What they got, in their 58-48 loss to the state-ranked (fourth in TBO poll) Devils, was the prettiest piece of hardwood hustle the Indians have shown all season.

    Against a Red Devil team that has had up and down performances against elite teams this holiday break, the Indians brought their best defense and strongest shot choices of the year, holding Williston close and even sharing a lead until the last three minutes of the game.

  • Lady Indians open second half...

    Chiefland girls opened the second half of their season with a bang, knocking off a hardy Bronson team 50-37. With C.J. Jack back from her preseason knee injury, the Lady Indians had one more scorer and rebounder on the floor. Bronson keeps improving, with much of the team playing better than they have all season, although scoring difficulties persist.

  • WHS football coach resigns

    After five good years leading the Red Devils, Williston football head coach Jamie Baker is calling it quits. In a surprise announcement Tuesday, Baker said he would be leaving the football field for the pasture to begin, or rather, reclaim a career in cattle ranching.

    “I've enjoyed coaching at Williston,” Baker said. “It's as good a position as I could have had, and my decision has nothing to do with the position or the team or the people here. It was just time for a change of direction.”

  • Transportation change could help...

    It's time to put to bed an upsetting rumor, if only temporarily, that middle school sports in Levy County Schools will be cancelled next year as part of the school budget restrictions. Not yet, anyway.

    “No, that's definitely a rumor; it's not true,” said Levy County Superintendent of Schools Bob Hastings.

    “But the fact is, we are evaluating ways to save the district money, and everything is on the table.”

  • Dressed to thrill: Indians wear...

    In the old Spike Lee Air Jordan commercials, Mars Blackmon used to ask Michael Jordan, “Money - hey Money! Is it the shoes?”

    On seeing the Indians in their new clothes Friday, hammering a 63-44 win over district and area rival Dixie County, Mars might ask a similar question.

    Answer – it wasn't. It was all Chiefland.

    “Our kids executed for me, both on offense and defense,” said Chiefland Head Coach Mark Lundy.

    “This is the kind of performance I hope can propel us into districts.”

  • New suits in time for old rival

    Call it a late Christmas – Chiefland varsity basketball finally got their glorious new threads Friday, just in time to suit up against their favorite rival, Dixie County. Due to layoffs at the manufacturer, the uniforms were delivered about a month later than promised, but still in time for the second half of the season.

    Indians' Head Coach Mark Lundy said the uniforms, paid for with the help of donations from local businesses and individuals, were delivered early Friday afternoon during a P.E. class.
