  • Indians flatten Bears again

    Chiefland baseball easily dispatched Dixie County last week in an 11-1, five-inning game. Friday was like a rewind of that game, only slower, with the Indians again winning 11-1, but moving the bats a little later for a six-inning game. It was baseball weather for the daytime matchup, and Indian fans savored the explosion of runs when it came.

    Chiefland starter Jacob Reidy pitched a complete game in the win and looked very good throughout.

    “Jacob was sharp on the mound,” said Indians head coach Kyle Parnell.

  • Bronson's Mike Weinar moves...

    Sharp-eyed viewers from Levy County might have noticed a familiar face in the pile after the Florida Gators won back-to-back NCAA national championships. That face belonged to Bronson's Mike Weinar, former student assistant coach for the 2002 state runner-up Bronson Eagles basketball team. More discerning viewers might see where Weinar is today – on the bench of the NBA Dallas Mavericks, where his title is Special Assistant to Head Coach Rick Carlisle.

  • Iron Bears top Indians in close...

    With a whole lotta woofin', Chiefland weightlifting seemed on the verge of capturing a triple crown over Dixie County Friday, trying to cap their football and basketball wins with a victory in the weight room. It was not to be. As both teams exhorted their lifters to greater achievement, the Bears hung on in the middle divisions to overcome the host Indians by just two points. Guest Bronson finished far behind. Final scores were Dixie County 46, Chiefland 44 and Bronson 18.

  • Beckham's 'Canes...

    Coach Kelly Beckham's Gainesville Hurricanes rode a big wave Tuesday en route to their 70-52 regional quarterfinal win over Jacksonville Wolfson. Leading by as much as 20 points early, the 'Canes fell prey to the Wolf Pack's half court trapping defense and gave up enough possessions to let the lead slip to seven. At halftime, with GHS up by 16, fans of the purple could see the rally coming their way and they bit their nails.

  • Indians rally late, can't...

    The Red Devils played host to the Chiefland Indians on one of the four Saturday games at the Devils Den this season. The Red Devils played as if they wanted to hand the Indians a win, committing eight errors on their way to an 8-6 district win. 

    After a scoreless first inning that saw the Indians threaten early with one-out, back-to-back base hits by Adam Burton and Clenton Wasson, starting Red Devil Pitcher Derik Milam struck out the next two hitters to retire the Indians in the top of the first.

  • Racing zooms back to Bronson...

    Bronson Motor Speedway is open again, after months of uncertainty. New owner Tony Parker says the speedway opened for the season Saturday March 7, and will be open every Saturday night through September. The actual schedule of events is being finalized even as practices and events go on, but Parker says race fans can reassure themselves, racing is back in Bronson.

  • Tyson will play for Evangel

    In the spring of his sophomore year, Zach Tyson wondered if he'd ever play football again; now in the spring of his senior year, he's just realizing he's not done playing yet. Last Wednesday, Tyson signed a letter of intent to play football for NAIA Evangel University in Springfield, Ill.

  • Third time's the charm for...

    When two mighty storms meet under the same roof, they blow the house down. In Friday's FHSAA Class 5A state final, the Clearwater Tornadoes challenged the Gainesville Hurricanes as no team has done since Eastside in the regular season, chipping the big Gainesville lead down to two points in the fourth quarter. The 'Canes rose to the occasion, winning head coach Kelly Beckham his first state title the old fashioned way – first with defense, then with shooting, and finally with free throws.

  • Bronson improves, Chiefland...

    When Chiefland and Bronson met Monday for the first time since preseason, the result was a tougher, tighter game. Bronson was still smarting from the 14-4 beating they took in the First Pitch tourney, and were looking for revenge. The Indians got a good outing from soph starter Marquis Green and Bronson tried out Seth Steinbacher, both with happy results. After some wicked hitting in the fifth and sixth innings, Chiefland won 9-7.

  • Knight gets 500th as assistant...

    When Gainesville High School basketball varsity assistant Philip Knight got his 500th career win Jan. 30 in a 60-52 barnburner against Eastside, fans who knew him from Bronson and Cedar Key scratched their heads and said, “Wait a second – that don't add up.”

    It does, though. Knight has sat at the right hand of local legend Kelly Beckham since he took over the Bronson program in 1984, and followed him to Gainesville starting this season. Beckham had his 500th win in January 2007. So why did it take Knight two years on the same bullet train cross the same river?
