  • Racing season heats up in Bronson

    After a disappointing rainout the week before, racers returned to Bronson Motor Speedway determined to get in all the driving that nature had denied them last week. Sonya Heater won the four-cylinder bomber class again in her Ford Mustang, making her the points leader by miles at 195. Tom Posavec won the sportsman class after a contentious race that saw Shelton Bowers' brand new car get unceremoniously broken in on the number four turn; Bowers finished the race with his rear valance flapping, but couldn't get higher than the third position.

  • CHS track gets ready for...

    Chiefland had a very good outing in their home track meet Friday, with Mark Cilo-Cilo winning the 400 meter, Zach Tyson the 300 hurdles and Chance Hall the discus. Although guest team Branford had the strongest showing on the day, the Indians placed well in many events, even against such competition as the Buccaneers, along with Bell, Bronson and Cedar Key. The Chiefland boys' 4x400 team also won that event.

  • Eagles hang on to down Mayo

    It happened just the way Coach Mike Pogue said – Bronson boys racked up a lead over district visitor Mayo, hung on through the middle innings, and had surgical closer Kelby Barber to bring them home for a 4-3 win over the Hornets.

    “Kelby was able to come in and stabilize the game for us,” said Pogue, the Eagles' head coach.

    “He shut them down pretty much single-handed.”

  • Devils explode at end for...

    The only sure thing about the county's best baseball matchup – Chiefland-Williston – is that there are no sure things. Weeks ago, Williston tried hard to give away the home game to the visiting Indians, before snatching back the 8-6 win. Saturday, the Devils came to Chiefland and their hosts hoped to get them back.

    They didn't. After six innings of close play among some of the best talent in the area, Williston exploded for nine runs in the top of the seventh to down Chiefland 18-6 in the last district game.

  • Chiefland has one-two punch at...

    Chiefland boys won their part of the Levy County Championship, with knockout performances by the 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams and several individuals. Kendon Wasson won the shot put, Chance Hall won the discus, Marcus McMahon won the 200 and the long jump, Genesis Cilo-Cilo won the 200, Mark Cilo-Cilo won the 400 and Zach Tyson won the 300 hurdles.

    Chiefland travels today down to the district meet, held at The Villages. Boys' coach Wendell Corbin says he is optimistic about the team's chances, “although I don't want to bloat their heads about it.”

  • Chiefland girls recover in time...

    With Amber Richardson's solo bomb in the sixth and a mighty rally in the seventh, Chiefland girls overcame a three-run deficit to top Taylor County 5-4. For all the game's thrilling rigor, the Lady Indians never should have trailed, having thrashed the Bulldogs 17-0 on their last visit to Perry.

    “I think we took them lightly, and we should never do that,” said Chiefland head coach Wayne Weatherford.

  • Chiefland girls can't close...

    Chiefland softball remains the only team to beat P.K. Yonge this season – in the district, and otherwise. Unfortunately, they couldn't make lightning strike twice. The Lady Indians traveled to Gainesville to try to slam the door on the series, but a pair of errors in the first inning let the Blue Wave score. The game was tied into the eighth inning when a bloop hit into shallow right let the P.K. baserunner go home, giving the Blue Wave the 3-2 win.

  • Diamond Indians clobber Bronson...

    Chiefland boys answered the challenge Friday against Bronson baseball, traveling to the water tower field to clobber the Eagles 19-3 in their own nest. Indians' head coach Kyle Parnell had been deprecating of Chiefland's home performance against Bronson back in March; the Indians rallied then to beat a better-looking Bronson team 9-7.

    “We were lucky to get a win,” Parnell said at the time.

    “Bronson should have beaten us.”

  • Cold night, hot action at...

    The roads were a little safer Saturday night after Rick Heath's Ford Pinto left the Four-Cylinder Bomber feature race on a flatbed wrecker. Heath climbed the retaining wall and rolled during the warmup lap leading into the feature. After being extracted from his car, he walked off the track.

  • Chiefland boys whip Newberry,...

    Chiefland boys rolled over Newberry again for the second half of that district series. Unlike February's five-inning, 10-run game in 30-degree temperature, this time they took all seven innings to win 7-0; the weather was fine.

    “It always feels good to get a district win,” said Indians' Head Coach Kyle Parnell.
