There are few things that can make one’s heart skip a beat like the words, “The mail’s in!”. The expression conjures up images of a color postcard with a picture of the Statue of Liberty, a letter from a loved one in battle halfway around the world, or even the Sears Roebuck Christmas catalog.

At the March 1896 meeting of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, a report was given on the Albion phosphate district located in the northeast corner of Levy County. The area embraced a territory about four miles wide and six miles long. The Florida Central and Peninsular Railroad, which ran from Fernandina, a shipping port on the Atlantic, to the Cedar Keys, on the Gulf of Mexico, passed through the center of the district.

  • The Family of William (Bill) Sheffield Jr. would like to thank everyone for their calls, prayers, cards and food during our time of sadness.
    Everything was gratefully appreciated.
    Thank you,
    The Family of Bill Sheffield.

  • I am so upset with the shenanigans that went on at Tuesday’s (Feb. 14) Suwannee River Water Management District Governing Board meeting, that I have to speak out. They are playing political games with our drinking water. People need to know.
I have been going to SRWMD Governing Board meetings regularly for over 10 years now. The current Governing Board of the Suwannee River Water Management District just doesn’t get it.

  • According to the American Diabetes Association, type 2 diabetes occurs when a person's body “does not produce enough insulin or the cells ignore the insulin.” It's the most common form of diabetes.
Barb Landes of West Liberty, Ohio, has been reading this column in the River Current. She knows diabetes better than just about anyone: her late father had type 2 diabetes, she has been a diabetes nurse educator for more than 30 years, and she herself was diagnosed in 2008 as having pre-diabetes.

  • A few words for candidates
It's the New Year and already the political races in Levy County are hopping — or should I say the charges are flying?
Here at the Citizen we want to be of service to our readers and allow candidates to communicate with the public.
But as with all things, there are a few rules.
    A. The Chiefland Citizen will allow you a one-time free announcement in the news columns where the candidate can make an unfiltered statement of their candidacy. Some have already been published.

  •  H.W. of Cedar Key writes: “You’ve been writing about golf carts lately, but I have a beef about another kind of nuisance on the roadways: bicycles. There’s this guy who rides his bicycle about in the middle of the road all the time and I’m tired of it. Isn’t he supposed to get out of MY way, not the other way around? Who has the right-of-way on State Road 24 coming into town…my car or his bike?”

    Dear H. W.:

  • Levy County District One Taxpayers are still without representation on the County Commission Board. We continue to pay taxes, but are not represented.

  • With this being Thanksgiving week, I always take the time and reflect back and think of all the things that I am truly thankful for.
