     A cross peninsula railroad for the State of Florida was the dream of the man for whom Levy County was named, David Levy Yulee.  The Florida Railroad, a 155.5 mile rail line, linked Fernandina on the Atlantic Ocean with Cedar Key on the Gulf of Mexico.

  • UF researchers receive grant money...

    A $512,000 grant will help University of Florida faculty test a new triple-threat approach to controlling hydrilla, the state’s most troublesome invasive aquatic weed.
    The grant was awarded to UF in September by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, said entomologist Jim Cuda, an associate professor with the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences who leads the team of research and extension faculty.

    Florida winters are mild by human standards, but don’t tell that to an aglaonema, sometimes called Chinese evergreen.
    The Sunshine State produces two-thirds of the nation’s ornamental foliage plants, many of them — such as aglaonema — tropical and subtropical species that suffer damage when the temperature drops below about 50 degrees Fahrenheit.
    The annual wholesale value of ornamental foliage crops grown in the U.S. is about $400 million.

    A group of avid gardeners — roughly half of them Certified Master Gardeners and the rest hopeful candidates — met at  Fanning Springs City Hall Auditorium to discuss the program and share pot luck.
    The goal was to introduce potential members to the training staff and Master Gardeners.

    Meagan Morgan, 16, of Chiefland, was recently crowned Miss Photogenic and Miss Holly in the Bell Christmas pageant Saturday Dec. 4.

    Local volunteer wins 2010 State...

    Horse lover Helen Koehler, of Levy County, was recently rewarded for her on-going contributions to the trail systems in the area at the 20th National Trails Awards symposium held in Chattanooga, Tennessee in November.
    The award  "recognizes an individual that has demonstrated outstanding contributions and provided consistent support for trail planning, development, or maintenance."

    Birth Announcement

       Brad Pitts would like to announce the birth of his sister, Grace Laren Pitts, who was born on Nov. 6, 2010.  She weighed 7 pounds, 15 ounces and was 20 inches long.
       Both are the children of William and Stacy Pitts and the grandchildren of Frank and Vicky Pitts, of Chiefland; Leslie McGuire, of Chiefland; and Alan Jenkins, of Trenton.
    They are the great-grandchildren of Attie and the late “Little Boy” Williams, of Chiefland; Jetty and the late Red Blake, also of Chiefland; and Betty and the late Elmer Jenkins, of Trenton.

    Log Cabin Quilters: Dec. 9

    The Log Cabin Quilters met Thursday, Dec. 3, at the Levy County Quilt Museum.  We are having a great time with our Quilt Show. We will leave everything as is until the first of the year, and then it’s time to get ready to take quilts and crafts to Tampa for the Florida State Fair.

  • Christmas play at Lighthouse Word...

    Are you looking for something a little different to help you celebrate Christmas this year?  If so, you will love the  “It’s A Madison County Christmas” play.

    The performance is at Lighthouse Word Church on Sunday, Dec. 12 at 10:30 a.m.

    The morning will begin with brunch and Christmas goodies, followed by the play, featuring good old country humor, and ending with traditional Christmas Carols.

    Sandra King said she first got interested in large dogs after a series of burglaries at her Chiefland home back in the mid 1980’s. She said she was working at a veterinary clinic at the time, and a co-worker, after hearing about the break-ins, said, “You need an Anatolian.”

  • Polar Express in 3-D comes to CES

    A free showing of “Polar Express in 3D” will be hosted by Chiefland Elementary School on Outdoor Family Fun Night on Saturday, Dec. 11 at the track at the school.

    Activities begin at 5 p.m. with music and games and the movie starts at 6 p.m.

    The public is invited to attend. It is recommended that those attending bring lawn chairs and blankets. The glasses to view the movie in 3D are also being provided at no charge.

    The school concession stand will be open selling goodies and hot chocolate.

        Air Force Maj. Gordon R. Taylor, whose wife, Mae, is the daughter of Richard A. and Susan C. Harding of Williston,  is returning to the Air Force Institute of Technology at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, after being deployed to Afghanistan serving in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

     From left,Jayme Blackwood, Harvey Slayton, Tom Partin and Leo Blackwood grind sugar cane Saturday at the  Suwannee River Shrine Club’s Cane Grinding and Turkey Shoot.

    The event runs through Nov. 26, with the exception of Sunday. Cane juice can be bought for $8 per gallon.  Syrup is $8 per bottle.

    The turkey shoot will be held Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.,m. and Thursday, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. the club is holding a combined craft sale-yard sale-bake sale-raffle the same week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

     Manatee Springs State Park, with the help of The Friends of Manatee Springs Parks, will present Clay Landing Days on Saturday and Sunday, November 27-28, from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
