    Chili cook-off title goes to Ayers...

        The winner of the annual Chiefland Senior Center Chili Cook-off held Jan. 12 during the annual senior health fair at Tommy Usher Community Center is Ayers Health Center in Trenton.

    How cold was it?

     It was cold enough the night of Jan. 13-- about 32 degrees-- that photographer Barbara Moore, Old Town, made a bowl of ice by freezing water in a plastic bucket. When Moore emptied out the water that did not freeze she had a bowl made of ice with interesting designs. If you look closely, it almost resembles a manatee. "I thought that was terribly unique. I'm going to try it again," Moore said.

    Search for ghosts brings group to...

    The conversation started in the dark where four women had gathered, seated on the floor of a small room at the back of the Chief Theater.  The only light came from the glowing red letters of an exit sign over a backstage door and a grouping of small lights clustered around the lens of an infrared camera precariously positioned on a tripod.

    Naval Sea Cadet Corps

     U.S. Naval Sea Cadets Corps, Manatee Division participated in the unit’s annual inspection. The cadets pulled out all the stops to improve over last year. This unit was in the top ten most improved in the nation last year. They are judged on uniform cleanliness, posture, military bearing and discipline.

  • Serving the Community

     Members of the Suwannee River Moose Family Center in Fanning Springs contributed turkeys and all the trimmings for 12 families in need. We worked with Sheriff Johnny Smith and his dept to select and deliver the baskets. This was a followup from Thanksgiving, which we also make an annual event.

     The March of Dimes Florida Chapter is seeking grant proposals for community-based programs addressing the health concerns of pregnant women and infants.  Community awards are available in amounts of up to $3,000.

  • Chiefland High School grad pens...

    Daron Johnson did not intend to grow up and become a mystery writer. The Baptist missions worker and son of Paul and Carolyn Johnson, of Chiefland, did not like to read books until he was 18, even though he did enjoy writing.

  • CHS reunion being planned

    A multi-year reunion for the classes  of 1950-1965 at Chiefland High School is being planned.  The organizational meeting will be at The Lighthouse Restaurant in Fanning at 6 PM on Friday, Jan 14.   Everyone is welcome.

    Christmas at the public library

    The Luther Callaway Public Library had a fun filled Christmas Party on Dec. 16. The children were encouraged to wear their pajamas for this special night time event.
    The evening started with Jenny Rodgers, Youth Services Coordinator, reading The Florida Night Before Christmas by E.J. Sullivan while waiting for a special visitor. Then, Santa Claus walked in the library with a big smile, a huge bag and a loud "Ho Ho Ho".

    Horse club donates to Shands Cancer...

    The Levy County Horse Club held its Tenth Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Benefit Trail Ride on Oct. 23.  The event is held at the Tidewater Trailhead in Goethe State Forest each year in conjunction with Forest Awareness Month and Greenways and Trails Month.
    This benefit is for a great cause and what better reason to be out on the trails.  This year’s event raised $6,500 that was donated to Shands Cancer Center to be utilized for the use of local breast cancer patients.
