    The up-and-coming country musician is one of the scheduled headliners at this year’s Levy County Fair–slated to perform April 9.
    The Shane Wooten Band performed at last year’s July 3 celebration and the experience left him wanting more.

     The Suwannee Valley Players production of "The Drowsy Chaperone," a musical within a comedy, has added a Sunday matinee performance in its final weekend at the Chief Theatre, 25 E. Park Avenue.

    Log Cabin Quilters: March 24

    The Log Cabin Quilters met Thursday, March 17 at the Levy County Quilt Museum.  What a busy day we had. The nine-patch square was taken out and is now ready to be hemmed.  A Dresden Plate quilt was put in and quilting will be started next week.  A Log Cabin quilt will also be put in next week and that will give us more places for quilters to sit and help.

    Handling the flag

    Members of Chiefland Boy Scouts of America Troop 514 demonstrated the folding of the American flag at Brown Masonic Lodge No. 51 in Chiefland, on Feb. 21, as part of the Lodge's  program on Americanism.

    Community volunteers tackle...

       Edward Michaels, facilitator for the A.F. Knotts Friends of the Library Bathroom Project, headed up a team to demolish the former library lavatories in order to upgrade to a handicapped-accessible unisex restroom meeting all state and local codes.
       The bathroom remodeling crew were, from left, Larry Cohan, Michaels, Tommy Sholes, Yankeetown Councilman Chris Fineout, Jean Holbrook, and Yankeetown Councilman Norm Shannahan. The project is funded by the Friends and the Yankeetown-Inglis Woman's Club.

  • Naval Sea Cadets Corps seeking...

    The Manatee Division of the U.S. Naval Sea Cadets Corps is seeking youth, ages 13 through 17, and the Navy League Cadet unit is seeking youth, ages 11 through 13, to join.
    The Manatee Division provides a fun and challenging environment that is free of drugs, alcohol, tobacco and gangs. At the same time it helps develop leadership abilities and broaden horizons using hands-on and self-paced training. Members are guided to become mature young adults whether they decide to join the military or not.

    Recruit visits Rotary Club

    Marine Corps Pvt. William Wasson, a graduate of Chiefland High School, gets the once-over from his father Tony Wasson, director of member and consumer services for Central Florida Electric Cooperative, before being introduced at the Chiefland Rotary Club. The younger Wasson is on recruiting duty in the area following basic training.

    Day at the fair

    TraveLynx bus No. 5605 pulled into the Winn-Dixie parking lot in Williston at about 7:45 a.m. Tuesday. It had already picked up more than half of its 45 passengers in Chiefland. A line of people formed in front of the door while the driver, a man named Rusty Sparks, and Levy County Quilt Museum Director Winnelle Horne stood out front checking off the names of people that had signed up to go the Florida State Fair in Tampa.

  • Become a master gardener

       Master Gardener class for Nature Coast begins March 17. The classes will be on Thursdays from March 17 until April 28. The location will be  The Levy County Extension Office at 625 N. Hathaway Blvd. (Hwy. 27) in Bronson.

    Log Cabin Quilters: Feb. 10

    The Log Cabin Quilters met on Feb. 3 at the Levy County Quilt Museum. Our days are so busy. We had eight big bags of fabric brought in – some we can use and some we have to find another place for it to go.  We know what we cannot use and the other place can use the fabric.
    The Chiefland Homemakers use a lot and we share with them. We do have several bags of size 16 men’s clothing that we have available for the taking.

  • Outreach team to visit Inglis,...

    Special to the Citizen
    People in need of assistance with food stamp and Medicaid applications, blood pressure and diabetes screening, resources for elders and supplemental food will be served when the Levy County Community Outreach Team visits Inglis and Rosewood on Feb. 26.
    The locations for the aid are:
    • Inglis Town Hall, 135 Highway 40 West, 9-11a.m.
    • Rosewood Baptist Church, 6331 S.W. 98th Terrace, Rosewood, 1-3 p.m.

    Artifact, fossil show aims to...

    Bill Allen sat behind a table loaded with arrowheads, spear points and the remnants of a large gray pot reassembled like a jigsaw puzzle. A steady line of people passed by, some carrying artifacts of their own, asking questions of Allen about what his objects were and where they had been found.
    “I think I done covered just about all of Levy, Dixie and Gilchrist counties over the years,” he said about his past forays into the woods and along freshly plowed fields in search of ancient pottery and stone tools.

     If you heard a rumbling noise when Stephen Scott of Jena pulled into BBQ Bill's last Thursday it wasn't car trouble. The noise came from the remains of a large fish hooked on a neon pink line that dragged behind the auto. Scott, a crewman working on cell towers in the Cedar Key area, said it was a prank played by his boss and that was all he had to say on the matter.
