    When the crowd gathered at the Cedar Key Library recently, they didn’t expect the great surprise. The Lower Suwannee National Wildlife Refuge was hosting a talk on the latest research on Swallow-tailed Kites.  As birders were arriving for Dr Ken Meyer’s presentation, Dr Dawn Miller, Gainesville veterinarian and certified wildlife rehabilitator, came in the door carrying a magnificent swallowtail.

       Spring is here and books are popping up on tables at the Bronson public library just waiting for you to purchase. Come to the Bronson Library on Saturday, April 21, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

    Cycle for Education April 21

       Cycle for Education is a fun way to help raise money to benefit students in the classroom for the Levy County Schools Foundation.
       The leisure ride follows the Greenway Trail. It begins at the Chiefland Shopping Center at 8 a.m. and continues past the Suwannee River through Fanning Springs, on to Cross City or as far as you want. The ride is up to 48 miles long, but riders can ride as little as they wish or go beyond the designated trail.

    Bronson Blue Springs has lost its sparkle.

    Severe drought, according to Suwannee River Water Management District Engineer Meagan Wetherington, has caused the spring to quit flowing. And recent rains, though not enough to recharge the aquifer, have caused water from nearby swamps, heavy with tannins, to flow into the spring, staining it muddy brown.

    State coloring winner goes national

    Karina Lowyns, center, a fourth grade student at Chiefland Elementary School, is congratulated by CES Principal Patrice McCully, left and Judy Allen of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5625 Ladies Auxiliary, for winning first place at the state level in the organization's Patriotic Coloring Contest. She took home a check for $100 and a certificate. Her entry now moves on to the national VFW Auxiliary competition.

    The Friends of the Luther Callaway Public Library (FLCPL) Board of Directors, will hold its monthly meeting at the library, 104 NE 3rd Street, Chiefland (a block behind City Hall), at 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 12.  The Luther Callaway Public Library is the Chiefland Branch of the Levy County Public Library System.     Suwannee Valley Rotary

       Patrick Allen, the director of Haven Hospice in Chiefland, was the special guest speaker at the March 29 Suwanee Valley Rotary meeting.
       Allen said the cancer foundation he helped organize, BACK Fighting Cancer Inc., is on a new mission this year: to provide financial assistance to the families for children fighting cancer in the Tri-County Area.

    Colorful flyers seen all over town brought a record crowd to the Cedar Key Library for the third presentation by Dr. Kenneth Sassaman.
    The University of Florida archaeologist has been working on the 30 coastal miles of the Lower Suwannee National Wildlife Refuge and the thirteen islands of the Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuge for the past three years, so nearly half of the standing-room-only audience had returned for the most recent findings.

    The March business meeting of the Springhouse Quilter's Guild convened Tuesday, March 13, with President Mary Rawlins officiating.  Madam President thanked the guild ladies for their assistance during the March 10 Trenton Quilt and Craft Festival and reiterated her appreciation for their sharing of time and self.  The 39 members and one guest present enjoyed a delightful brunch.  Door prizes were won by Janet Gooding, Lois Johnson and Ve Wietor.
