    Forest festival

    Each year, Florida's governor declares the fourth week in October "Florida Forestry Week," to coincide with the Florida Forest Festival in Taylor County
    Forestry is Florida's No. 1agricultural crop, above citrus, and among Florida's 67 counties, Taylor County is No. 1 in forestry, according to the University of Florida.
    More than 20,000 people are expected join in the annual celebration as the festival marks its 56th year on Saturday, Oct. 22, at Forest Capital State Park in Perry.

    River cleanup persists despite...

    Gray skies and the threat of stormy weather may have contributed to a low turnout at this year's Third Annual Suwannee River Cleanup Saturday, but participants, working out of canoes, kayaks and boats, were still able to fill the bottom of a 2-cubic-yard dumpster with trash pulled from the river's muddy banks.
    About 35 people showed up, less than half of the 85 who participated last year.

  • Library friends to meet

       The Friends of the Luther Callaway Public Library (FLCPL) Board of Directors will hold its monthly meeting at the Library, 104 N.E. 3rd Street, Chiefland, at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 13.

    Log Cabin Quilters for Oct. 6

    The Log Cabin Quilters met Thursday, Sept 29, at the Levy County Quilt Museum.  We had dozens of quilt, knit and crochet magazines brought in so everyone enjoyed looking for future projects.  We still have some left.
     Many people think that all we do is quilt and have good lunches.  This year we gave  our 25th quilt to the Central Florida Electric Company. We met at their building for many years before the museum was built.

    Levy County centenarian says her...

    After a quick adjustment, and then another, on the piano bench, Amelia Erwin leaned forward to pore over a sheaf of music.
    “No, I don’t think I can play that one,” she said to the visitor, casting the pages aside and rifling through another stack.

  • Y-I Woman’s Club

       Bingo Season Off to a Good Start
       Thursday BINGO at the Yankeetown Inglis Woman’s Club is off to a great start. All proceeds go toward college scholarships for local students and provide The Kind News for 11 class rooms at Yankeetown School. Come early to purchase your BINGO cards and enjoy fresh homemade goodies from the “Thursday Kitchen.” Doors open at 6pm, with BINGO games beginning at 7pm.

    Log Cabin Quilters for September 29

    The Log Cabin Quilters met Thursday, Sept 22, at the Levy County Quilt Museum. It was a special day with eight ladies from the Busy Bee of Old Town visiting. They come when they can as they are busy with their projects.   
    They also brought covered dishes so we had plenty of food for lunch. The fellowship and sharing of ideas with our guests made a great day.

  • Levy County woman to celebrate...

    Amelia Erwin will celebrate her 100th birthday Sunday, Oct. 9 at the First United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall in Williston from 3 - 5 p.m. All former students, colleagues, family and friends are invited to the reception.
    Erwin was born Oct. 4, 1911, as one of eight children to William Wofford, a lumber contractor, and Lillie Jane Williams.
    She was raised and attended school in Ellzey, a town named after her family. Her great-grandfather built and founded the Ellzey Methodist Church, of which Erwin was a member. She later graduated from Bronson High School.

    Chiefland historian publishes book...

    Toni Collins isn’t shy about her beliefs, especially when it comes to history.
    “I’ve always been distressed that our young people are not learning about the history of this county,” she said Friday from the living room of her Chiefland home.
    Collins, who used to work for the county, was largely responsible for organizing the county’s historical archives and started the county’s historical board.

    September is National Sea Cadet...


    Once a sea cadet goes through two weeks of recruit training and completes their Basic Military Requirements course work they are eligible for a variety of advanced trainings.

    Log Cabin Quilters for September 22

    The Log Cabin Quilters met Thursday, Sept, 15, at the Levy County Quilt Museum.  We had a lot of yarn brought in.  There are lots of colors and sizes and we’re selling it for $1.00 or less.  We have crochet needles also.  The yarn will help make great Christmas presents without spending a lot of money.
    So many people are sick this week.  Our prayers are with Marge Prevatt. Goldie was out Tuesday and is doing just great.

  • Calling all artists ages 4 to 12

       Show off your artistic skills by entering a poster in the Florida Farm Bureau Youth Poster Contest. Each person may enter one poster based on the theme “Back Where I Come From” and agriculture.
       There are three different age divisions for competition: ages 4-6, ages 7-9 and ages 10-12 (all ages as of September 12, 2011).
       Posters will be on display at the Florida Farm Bureau 70th Annual Meeting, Oct. 6-8, 2011.

    n Posters can be no larger than 14” x 22” and can’t be matted or framed.

  • Murder of Scarecrows opens Friday

       The Suwannee Valley Players announce the opening of the comedy thriller “Murder of Scarecrows” by Pat Cook. Gerald and Cristine Dandridge, played by Andy and Bobbie Kidd, always give a Halloween party for their friends, Anthony and Lydia Murray, (Rob and Jill Hart), Jimmy Starnes (Austin Ross) and Shirley Frohman (Kelci Grant) and Jack Clancy (Greg Mercier) and Clarice Jarrett (Emily Baker).

    Log Cabin Quilters for Sept. 8

    The Log Cabin Quilters met Thursday, Sept. 1, at the Levy County Quilt Museum. Our days are getting so busy so we know that the fall of the year isn’t so far away.   Our Northern Quilters will be back with us soon.
    Goldie McHenry is at Hospice and we visited with her. So far she is doing well. Our prayers are with so many now and more are being added to the list to be remembered.

  • Suwannee River Garden Club

    The Garden Club's year book is in the process of being assembled and will be sent to the printer no later than Sept. 14.

    Also, our rummage sale will be on Saturday Nov. 5, so start sorting those gently used items you no longer want or need in preparation for the event.

    Log Cabin Quilters for Sept. 1

    The Log Cabin Quilters met Thursday, Aug. 25 at the Levy County Quilt Museum.  It was another busy day that had more fabric being brought in so everyone had a great time looking for what they could use.  Several quilts were brought in for us to see.
    We had a beautiful counted cross-stitch quilt brought in for show.  It was finished in 2003 and we know it took months, if not years, to complete.  That takes a lot of dedication to finish a piece like that.

    Chiefland woman gets royal treatment

    Carol Kearns was on a mission trip to Colima, Mexico, with her husband, Pastor George Kearns of Lighthouse Word Church in Chiefland, when the call came.
    Would she be interested in doing God's work in Swaziland?
    Why not spend 10 days in July in Swaziland, one of the last countries ruled by a king who is the closest thing to an absolute monarch. It's only 7,800 plus miles away, land-locked between South Africa and Mozambique.

    Not so strategic habitat...

    Ten years ago I was in my first week as manager of three rural Mississippi national wildlife refuges (Hillside, Morgan Brake and Matthews Brake).
    The Project Leader and I were out kicking some dirt on one of the refuges when we began discussing plans for the coming year. He talked about many things that day, but I clearly remember hearing him say in his soft southern accent, “I like diversity. I like to manage for diversity. When I look across the landscape, I like to see diversity.”

    Bronson boy grows into refuge...

    The first 11 years of David Viker's life were spent in suburban New York. And he fell in love with the outdoors while camping with his family in the Catskills Mountains.
    Then came the change that would determine his destiny; a divorce transplanted his family to Bronson.
    "The things I liked most about the outdoors in New York, I liked about Florida," Viker said in a telephone interview from his office in Atlanta, Ga., where he oversees 130 refuges in 10 states, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico with 750 employees.
