  • Clay Landing Days at Manatee Springs

    To celebrate the living history of this beautiful first magnitude spring, Manatee Springs State Park, with the help of the park’s Citizens Support Organization-The Friends of Manatee Springs Parks, Inc, present Clay Landing Days on Nov. 25-26. The event features rides through the north trail system, where visitors will experience the lifestyle of early settlers and Seminole Indians.

     Muriel Ellison, past president and current member of the Chiefland Home and Community Education Club, continued her club’s tradition of supporting the Suwannee Valley Players with a contribution recently. Accepting the check on behalf of the Players was member Kassie Barron, left.

    Cedar Key Teens of the 60s reunion is Saturday, Nov. 5, from 1 to 5 p.m., at the Island Room Restaurant, located next to City Park. Cost: $25 per person, includes food  and beer.

    Moose Club Halloween

         The Moose Club’s annual Halloween party for the children of the community was a great success. There were more than 50 children who showed up for fun, food and games held at the club's meeting hall—a safe afternoon to show off costumes and scary faces. All won prizes.

       The men and women of the Moose Club worked hard to transform the hall into a big spook house. The children enjoyed it and said they were looking forward to next year's event.

    Log Cabin Quilters for Nov. 3

    The Log Cabin Quilters met Thursday, Oct 27, at the Levy County Quilt Museum.  What a busy day we had.   

    Many of the Bible Squares have been completed so we can begin to see how lovely the quilt will be.    The Log Cabin Quilt that will be going to the State Fair in February was taken out of the frame for hemming to be done.  It took months for us to complete and is one of the many variations of the Log Cabin design.

    Make plans for Veterans Day

    County parade in
    Bronson this year
    Levy County's official  parade to honor military veterans comes with a bonus this year. Because Bronson High School's Homecoming is on Friday, Nov. 11, the students will be joining the county's official salute.
    The combined parade will roll at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 11, from the intersection of Pine Street and U.S. 27A, at the U.S. Post Office with at least 40 floats and units from veterans' organizations and the usual number from the high school, including the Marching Eagles band.

    Biker event helps grease LARC’s...

    Lt. Sean Mullins said it was sometime in 2006 when, as a member of the Community Relations Division for the Levy County Sheriff’s Office, he was asked to come and speak to clients of the Levy Association of Retarded Citizens about matters of law, the types of things all people, as members of society, should be familiar with.

    “I had no idea what to expect,” Mullins said. “I gave a little speech, and they really appreciated it … I truly fell in love with them.”

    Donation

       Nature Coast Hospice and SREC of Dixie County both were presented $100 checks from the Chiefland HCE (Home and Community Educators). The money was given to the two organizations to be used for services that they provide to their clients. The goal of the HCE is to strenghten individuals, families and communities through education, leadership and action.

    Birth: Lee

       Jacob Thomas Lee was born to David and Christi Lee, of Tallahassee on Aug. 1, 2011. He weighed 7 pounds,1 ounce and was 19 and a half inches long.
       Jacob is the grandson of Howard and Carol Marsh, of Chiefland; Donna and the late Walter Tooke, of Bell; the late Mr. and Mrs. Watson, of Trenton; and Margie and the late Seth Tooke, also of Trenton.

    Log Cabin Quilters for Oct. 20

    The Log Cabin Quilters met Thursday, Oct 13, at the Levy County Quilt Museum. Our Bible Quilt is getting off to a great start. We have had 11 squares completed so far and we’ll need another 30 or more before we can start to assemble the quilt. If we have more squares than we need for the quilt, we’ll make pillows with those squares. The quilt will be very colorful with the bright colors that are being used.
    We still have many craft magazines and if you need any, they are free. We have so much donated to us and we enjoy sharing with others.

    Log Cabin Quilters for Oct. 13

    The Log Cabin Quilters met Thursday, Oct. 6, at the Levy County Quilt Museum.  We have started our 2012 quilt.  It will be a Bible quilt and it is going to be very interesting when it is put together.
    We also want to tell you about Lancaster Correctional.   We started April 24, 1996, with Jarrod Jones and eight young men.  Through the next four years, we had their help building the museum. Today we have worked with over 4,000 inmates.

    Scouts pay tribute

       Boy Scouts of America scout Austin Ross needed a project to achieve his next rank. After mulling over a few ideas, he decided upon a flagpole for the yard at First United Methodist Church in Chiefland.
       Several businesses and groups in the area, as well as fellow scouts, helped Austin with the project, which included the construction of a flagpole and a concrete base.
       A commemorative plaque, honoring WWII Merchant Marine Seaman Robert H. Ross (Austin's grandfather), was fastened to the flag's pedestal.

    Forest festival

    Each year, Florida's governor declares the fourth week in October "Florida Forestry Week," to coincide with the Florida Forest Festival in Taylor County
    Forestry is Florida's No. 1agricultural crop, above citrus, and among Florida's 67 counties, Taylor County is No. 1 in forestry, according to the University of Florida.
    More than 20,000 people are expected join in the annual celebration as the festival marks its 56th year on Saturday, Oct. 22, at Forest Capital State Park in Perry.

    River cleanup persists despite...

    Gray skies and the threat of stormy weather may have contributed to a low turnout at this year's Third Annual Suwannee River Cleanup Saturday, but participants, working out of canoes, kayaks and boats, were still able to fill the bottom of a 2-cubic-yard dumpster with trash pulled from the river's muddy banks.
    About 35 people showed up, less than half of the 85 who participated last year.

       The Friends of the Luther Callaway Public Library (FLCPL) Board of Directors will hold its monthly meeting at the Library, 104 N.E. 3rd Street, Chiefland, at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 13.

    Log Cabin Quilters for Oct. 6

    The Log Cabin Quilters met Thursday, Sept 29, at the Levy County Quilt Museum.  We had dozens of quilt, knit and crochet magazines brought in so everyone enjoyed looking for future projects.  We still have some left.
     Many people think that all we do is quilt and have good lunches.  This year we gave  our 25th quilt to the Central Florida Electric Company. We met at their building for many years before the museum was built.

    After a quick adjustment, and then another, on the piano bench, Amelia Erwin leaned forward to pore over a sheaf of music.
    “No, I don’t think I can play that one,” she said to the visitor, casting the pages aside and rifling through another stack.
