Gulf storm front good, bad for Levy

The low pressure area in the Gulf of Mexico that has brought spotty rains to the area is getting more organized and the National Weather Service at Ruskin has issued several notices of foul weather that will affect Levy County residents for today and the rest of the week.

In a Hazardous Weather Outlook for Southwestern and Western Central Florida the NWS is calling for widely scattered thunderstorms becoming more numerous by this evening and overnight, especially near the coast.

Woman charged in death of girl dumped in Levy County

A second suspect was charged Wednesday in the death of a Brooksville teen last December.

Crystal Michelle Brinson, 36, of Brooksville is facing a charge of first-degree murder in the death of DeAnna Lee Stires, 18. No bond was allowed.

College assured

Kierra Langford and Wyatt Roberson, both fifth grade students at Chiefland Elementary School, were presented with $4,000 scholarships to the College of Central Florida by Levy County School Superintendent Robert Hastings.

Langford received the Robert O. Hastings Scholarship and Roberson received the Jack Wilkinson Scholarship in honor of Coach Doyle McCall.

Republicans meet Monday

The Levy County Republican Executive Committee meets Monday, June 17, at 6:30 p.m. at Bronson Restaurant on U.S. 27A in Bronson. 

   The meeting will begin with food and fellowship, followed by a business session at 7 p.m.

Farm Bureau to build "home" for FFA in Gainesville

Florida Farm Bureau President John Hoblick has announced that the statewide organization will lead a bold partnership to build a new headquarters for the Florida FFA Association, according to a press release from the Farm Bureau. The facility will be constructed on Florida Farm Bureau’s campus in Gainesville.

Search continues for 2 boaters off Horseshoe Beach

The search continues for the two men missing since Saturday, June 15, off Horseshoe Beach in Dixie County, according to Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) officials.

The men were reported missing at approximately 11:30 p.m. Saturday. FWC and U.S. Coast Guard vessels began looking for the boat, which had been reported as overdue.

Woman sentenced in motorcyclist death

It was almost two years to the day of a fatal accident south of Chiefland that caused the death of motorcyclist Marvin Hancock that Imogene Swafford was sentenced on a charge of negligent vehicular manslaughter.

On Wednesday, Circuit Judge Stanley Griffis III meted out three years and six months in prison, followed by two years community custody and eight years of drug offender probation. She will receive credit for serving seven months and 22 days in jail.

Proposed Levy nuclear plant could have joint owners

When its retirement came, the Crystal River nuclear plant had 10 owners, with Duke Energy the majority holder. A similar arrangement could be used for the planned Levy County nuclear plant.

Having a share of the Crystal River nuclear plant, even as small as the .04 percent owned by the city of Bushnell, carried an obligation to maintain a decommissioning trust fund, according to the participation agreement.

Teen driver program back for summer

 A Teen Driver Improvement Program is being offered to all Levy County students who have a  license or learners permit or who are about to get their learners permit by the Levy County Sheriff’s Office, Community Relations Division.
