  • We need an interim commissioner

We live in Levy County where only three of our five county commissioners are on the job.

And Tuesday proved to be the day some folks learned what could happen if one of those three was unable to carry out their duties.

Folks were gathered for the regular meeting of the commission. But Chair Nancy Bell was not there.

Folks waited and fidgeted and wondered aloud where she was. Did something happen to her?

  • Setting the record straight

It has now become necessary that I make this statement concerning my decision to terminate Mrs. Mary Golding. My hope was that this situation would not have to be aired out in the media, for the sake of how this situation can damage the reputations of myself, the office, and Mrs. Golding. I myself have worked hard over the past years to be involved in the community and to lead a life that I hope will draw honor and glory to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, because he is Worthy.

  • Social Security Resolutions for 2009

The New Year is a time for many people to make resolutions for the year ahead.

In past years, Social Security has suggested resolutions such as to plan ahead for your retirement, check your Social Security Statement, and safeguard your Social Security card and number. This year, we’d like to turn the tables and pledge to you our own resolutions as an agency. In 2009 Social Security resolves to …

  • New year, new president, same old problems

Some people might categorize me as a skeptic. Maybe I am but I am in agreement with good old Benjamin Franklin who reputedly said, “Don’t believe anything you hear and only half of what you see.” This philosophy was probably a result of inventing the bifocals.

My personal history has shown that every time I get my hopes up they are soundly dashed to the ground in disappointment. I often refer to myself as an optimistic-pessimist; I know for sure things are going to go wrong. And, I am rarely disappointed in that aspect of life.

  • Regarding Troy McClain

Perhaps you remember Troy McClain appearing on Donald Trump's highly rated “The Apprentice” television show in 2004. Since then, besides starting numerous business ventures, McClain ultimately became a passionate worldwide advocate for people with disabilities, including being an official spokesperson for the 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games held in Idaho beginning February 7.

  • In with a bang; out with a sigh . . . 2008–goodbye

While I always look forward to the dawn of a new year, I am nonetheless saddened by the passing of the old year.

Most people celebrate New Year’s Eve as a time to cast away the old and embrace the new. I do too, to a certain extent, but there’s always a small bit of the evening that I claim as a reflective period to remember, to mourn and of course, to laugh.

    2008 started off with a huge bang–literally.

  • Governor should act on commission appointments

    To the editor:

I recently read a couple of articles about the possible appointments for the Board of County Commissioners.

I noticed there were several names of highly qualified individuals.

I also noticed there were several individuals that [sic] did not live in those two respective Districts. If the Governor appoints someone for these two respective Districts who lives outside the respective Districts this might raise a few questions.

  • New disease sweeping our area

    To the editor:

It’s a new year and what a wonderful time for change.
