  • Area's jobless rate drops to 5.9%

    The November  unemployment rate for the CareerSource Citrus Levy Marion area dropped by 0.2 percent over the month to 5.9 percent, which is 1.1 percentage points lower than the same time last year.

    Out of a labor force of 194,843, there were 11,427 unemployed, a decrease of 592 since October and 2,467 fewer than in November 2014. 

  • Students can enter dairy recipe competition

         The Dairy Council of Florida is hosting its third annual Gridiron Cooking Challenge, a fun-filled food competition for elementary and middle school students throughout Florida. Elementary and middle school students in groups of four are encouraged to create and submit an original recipe that features dairy products, such as milk, cheese and yogurt.

    The deadline for submissions is February 29.

  • Duke Energy customers to see lower rates

       Duke Energy’s Florida customers will see lower electric rates for 2016 as new rates will go into effect with January billing.

       The January 2016 rate will be $114.15 per 1,000 kWh (residential), which is 6 percent lower than the final 2015 rate of $121.59

  • Company honors volunteer firefighter with plaque, dinner

        Volunteer Firefighter Kevin W. Davis was speechless on Monday evening after being presented with a plaque denoting him as the Firefighter of the Year for the Chiefland Fire Rescue by Restoration Specialists. Ben Torricelli, corporate business development manager, traveled from Sumter County for the presentation and to treat the city fire department and city and county officials with a meal.

  • Gun Classes

    WILLISTON

     The Friends of Williston Trust is offering a firearms training course for individuals applying for a Concealed Firearms License.

    The class is on Jan. 16, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The course consists of four hours of classroom training and four hours of range experience. Instructors will be law enforcement and/or NRA certified trainers. The cost of the class is $75 per person. Class size will be held to a maximum of 16 students.

    •Dec. 31, Jeremy Mason Arrington, 35, Chiefland, two out of county warrants. Bond $85,000.

    •Jan. 1, David Barnes, 51, Chiefland, battery, domestic battery, possession of weapon or ammo by convicted felon. Bond $85,000.

    •Jan. 2, Michael B. Bergeron, 26, Inglis, FTA. Bond $1,000.

    •Dec. 28, William Richard Bonish, 63, Inglis, VOP.

    Peace Lutheran Church offers

    Services at Brookdale Citrus

    Rev. Terry McKee and several members of Peace Lutheran Church, Dunnellon, hold worship services on the 3rd Tuesday of each month for residents of Brookdale Citrus in Lecanto.

    A good number of the residents attended the December service and enjoyed singing Christmas carols after the service. Piano accompaniment was provided by Rebekah Williams.

  • An Old Geezer Faces Another New Year

     Here we go again, tricked into thinking it is a New Year when there is absolutely nothing new about it. It is the same ole, same ole, Déjà vu all over again. The person who invented this "New Year" ought to be sued for defamation of characterization.

     I suppose everybody has their own definition of "new," but when I think of new I think of something that has not been before not the recycling of something old.
