  • Help available deciding on Medicare Disenrollment

     Starting this year, Medicare will provide an Annual Dis-enrollment Period from Jan. 1 until Feb. 14 to allow beneficiaries who have a Medicare Advantage Plan to make changes. You may choose to switch back to Original Medicare or switch back to Original Medicare and join a Prescription Drug Plan.

    A multi-year reunion for the classes  of 1950-1965 at Chiefland High School is being planned.  The organizational meeting will be at The Lighthouse Restaurant in Fanning at 6 PM on Friday, Jan 14.   Everyone is welcome.

  • Event marks 88th anniversary of Rosewood race riot

    Retired Professor Marvin Dunn's Jan. 2 event to mark the 88th anniversary of the Rosewood incident had an atmosphere of a family reunion, rather than serving as a reminder of a week when eight people died in racial violence.

  • Horse church permit dragged across finish line

    The Levy County Commission took 90 minutes to make a decision in a request for a conditional use permit for a cowboy church and horse arena to be located on U.S. Highway 27A and Northeast 162nd Court.

  • Senior Health Fair, Chili Cook-Off

    The Chiefland Senior Center will hold its Annual Health Fair and Chili Cook-Off from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 12 at Tommy Usher Pineland Center, Chiefland.

    The event is free to all senior citizens. Health care providers will be on hand to inform seniors of the services available in the community.

    Judging for the chili contest that is open to seniors is at noon.

    The event is sponsored jointly by the Chiefland Senior Center, Haven Hospice and Gentiva Home Health Care.

  • Surprised about Rosewood

    I was surprised to read that Dr. Marvin Dunn plans to go ahead with his Rosewood event even though the Levy County Commissioners denied his petition for a special event’s permit.  Many events are held in Levy County each year and the sponsors of those events have no difficulty applying for and providing the county with all required information to ensure a safe environment for all involved.

  • On Santa Claus

    Based on my five-year-old’s behavior in the last few days leading up to Christmas, I got the distinct impression he did not believe Santa was watching him through a crystal ball.
    And after his ruthless cross-examination of me on how Santa manages to transcend the laws of physics, I got another distinct impression that he did not believe in Santa at all.
