  • Help the family of Michael Dunn

    Sheila Smith is worried about her neighbors, Anthony and Christine Dunn. The couple lost their son, Michael Dunn, just before Christmas in a tragic accident at their home off County Road 232.

    Since the accident, Smith said both of Michael’s parents, as well as his two sisters, have really been struggling with the loss of such a special boy. Driving the family minivan, which is the vehicle that ran over Michael, has been especially difficult, so the family plans to trade in the vehicle, Smith explained last week.

  • Chiefland Chamber annual banquet

     At least 150 business people enjoying a great evening of activities, entertainment, networking, a delicious dinner and plenty of fun will meet on Tuesday, Feb. 23, at the Tommy Usher Center for the annual banquet held by the Greater Chiefland Area Chamber of Commerce. The event starts at 6:30 p.m.  Dinner will be served at 7 p.m. Admission is $27 per person, and prepaid reservation is required.  Door prizes will add to the fun.

  • Artifact Show at Usher Center on Saturday

    On Saturday, Feb. 6, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. there will be a Native American artifact show at the Tommy Usher Center, in Chiefland.

    There will be over a thousand different artifacts, some never before seen by the public.  The show is free. Collectors from as far as North Carolina and Palm Beach will be in attendance.

     If you want to learn more about the birds you see every day in our area, the Central Florida Community College Levy Center is offering a four-hour birding class.

  • Teacher of the Year finalists named

    The selection committee for the Levy County School District's Teacher of the Year award has nominated three finalists for 2009-2010 school year. The three teachers selected are:- Alexis Gordon, Joyce Bullock Elementary School.- Sherry Beauchamp, Chiefland Elementary School.- Suann Dupont, Chiefland High School. The selection committee will observe the three finalists in their classrooms on Friday, then return to the county office to make their final decision.

  • Wellness Committee to meet with Health Advisory Council

    The School Board of Levy County Wellness Committee will join with the School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) for a joint meeting on today February 4 at 2:50 p.m.

  • County ends agreement to rent office

    A building with a leak and a mold problem that was used by the Guardian ad litem Program has been vacated and the owner served with notice that the Levy County Board of Commissioners is terminating the lease.

    County Coordinator Freddie Moody announced at Tuesday's regular meeting that a notice was sent to the owners Mr. and Mrs. Wilfredo Aqui  of Orange Park notifying them that the lease is terminated due to “the roof, moisture, mold and health issues.” Moody quoted a letter sent to the Aquis:

     The Suwannee River Water Management District has created a new page on its website (www.mysuwanneeriver.com) to provide more information about the new year-round water conservation requirements for landscape irrigation that went into effect Jan. 6.

    The webpage also provides water conservation tips for homeowners, utilities, farmers and other users.
