  • Two corrections officers charged

    Lancaster Corrections Institution officers James Barry, 41, of Bell, and Michael Devanie, 44, of Trenton, are charged with one felony count  of malicious battery, or cruel or inhuman treatment upon an inmate causing great bodily harm following a 6-month investigation into an incident that left an inmate hospitalized.
    The two, who had been on administrative leave during the investigation, were charged by Florida Department of Law Enforcement officers. The duo turned themselves in at the Gilchrist County Jail.

  • Chiefland Christmas Festival today; Santa arrives at 6 p.m.

    There will be snow in Chiefland this year.  But only because it will be trucked in for this year's Chiefland Christmas Festival.  The festival will take place Saturday, Dec. 4, at the train depot at Trailhead Park on U.S. Highway 19 and the surrounding area. The event is free and starts at 10 a.m. and lasts until 9 p.m.

    Schedule of events:

    • Festival at Trailhead Park, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
     Arts, crafts, food, music and children's activities will be featured in this portion of the festival.

  • Dixie Music Center presents An Old Town Christmas

    Dixie Music Center presents "An Old Town Christmas," Sunday, Dec. 5, at 2 p.m.

  • Zach Tyson in concert

    Singer/evangelist Zach Tyson is the headliner at a Chiefland High School Fellowship of Christian Athletes concert, "live the Gift, Christmas Blessings 2010."

    Tyson, a 2009 graduate of CHS, is a longtime member and past president of the CHS Fellowship, is kicking off his 2011 music tour with this performance on Wednesday, Dec. 15, at in the Chiefland High School Auditorium. The fellowship begins at 5 p.m. with hot dogs, snacks, chips and drinks, while the show is at 6:30 p.m. There will be skits, interpretative dance, special music and a speaker.

  • Christmas recital

    There will be a Christmas recital, "The Real Gift," presented by D&D Studios at the Chiefland High School Auditorium at 6 p.m., Saturday, Dec 10. Admission is a new toy to be donated to a local charity. Children 12 and under get in for free.

  • Haven Hospice hosts annual Veterans Day breakfast at the Tri-Counties Care Center

     Haven Hospice honored approximately 75 veterans at its annual Veterans Day breakfast on Nov. 11 at the Tri-Counties Care Center.  The event recognized local veterans as well as Haven staff and volunteers who are veterans.

        Air Force Maj. Gordon R. Taylor, whose wife, Mae, is the daughter of Richard A. and Susan C. Harding of Williston,  is returning to the Air Force Institute of Technology at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, after being deployed to Afghanistan serving in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
