  • School Board, superintendent comments

School Superintendent Bob Hastings took the occasion of the March 8 Levy County School Board meeting to praise the 600-plus employees for adjusting so well to the new Skyward data entry system that allows teachers, parents and students to access information about student performance on-line.
Some of the features include not only grades, but attendance, athletic eligibility and health records.
Hastings went on to also praise Director of Finance, Bob Clemons and his team for their “tremendous efforts.”

  • Secrets unearthed during archaeology month

March is Florida Archaeology Month sponsored by the Florida Anthropological Society and its partners that protect archaeological sites throughout the state. Each year the Lower Suwannee National Wildlife Refuge hosts walks at its Shell Mound site made famous by the spectacular collection of pottery in Bradenton’s South Florida Museum.
The last of two Ranger-led walks at Shell Mound is 10 a.m. March 25. Meet the Ranger in the small parking area next to the Shell Mound Trailhead to learn the history of the mound, its native people and native plants.

  • Need for hospital in Chiefland

I, for one, would appreciate knowing where Noel Desmond picked up the statistics of how many people would use a hospital in Chiefland.  He states people would rather drive 50 miles to Gainesville for medical assistance.

  • Wanting a hospital

Well, I guess we don’t need a hospital. Noel Desmond says so.
You know what, I am so tired of going to Gainesville for a chest X-ray or a lot of things we could get right here. It costs me $30 for gas.  And it’s a $35 co-pay from my insurance, plus lunch for my daughter, who has to take me on her day off. It’s the same mileage to Crystal River or Williston.

  • Fly in the ointment

A Mr. Noel Desmond seems to be the fly in the ointment on several projects important to the people of Levy County.
