  • Economic development council loses director

    The Nature Coast Business Development Council asked for the resignation of its fifth director since its incorporation in 2000 during a contentious, and sometimes angry, meeting June 28.
    Pat O'Neal, who was hired one year ago, was told to submit his resignation by July 1 in a 6-0-1 vote with its newest member abstaining. O'Neal was given 24 hours to respond to the demand that he resign.

  • County commission questions tourism grants

    When Carol McQueen steps up to the podium at the Levy County Commission meetings she usually gets an automatic pass — no questions asked — on her request.
    Things were different on Tuesday when she sought approval of six advertising grants — none over $3,000, and commissioners asked questions before approving the grants. The grants, funded by the 2 percent tax on transient lodgings, were recommended for approval by the Tourist Development Council.

    Once again I have ventured to Washington, D.C., with the Levy County Safety Patrol from Williston Elementary School. We, in Bus 1, were led by Mrs. Lisa Posteraro and School Resource Officer Grant Sandlin, who kept us organized, entertained and safe (Bus 2 was headed up by Frank McKoy and Joelene Vining).

  • Tourism would go up in smoke

    Dixie Waste Services, under a new bunch of promoters, is attempting again to build an incinerator on the Eastern edge of Dixie County. Despite continued objections from the public, the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has decided to grant another two-year extension of their Air Construction Permit.

    n Welding program coming to Levy Center
       The College of Central Florida will offer an Applied Welding Technologies program at the Levy Center starting Monday, Aug. 22. Classes will meet Monday through Thursday, 5:30-8:30 p.m.

       WE SOAR, Inc./Gospel Fest Committee is inviting soloists, choirs, ensembles, instrumentalists, quartets, dance and mime ministries and Christian step teams to participate in the 10th Annual Williston Gospel Music Festival  on Friday, Aug. 5 at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 6,  2 p.m. –6.p.m. This event is a celebration and promotion of traditional, contemporary, rap, and southern style gospel music.
