  • Sea cadets recognized for hard work and achievements

    Several cadets of Manatee Division were recognized by local organizations and their commanding officer, Lieutenant Junior Grade Scott Arnold at their April drill.

    The first was League Cadet Nicholas Sikalos, age 12 of Spring Hill, selected as the Manatee Division League Cadet of the Year.

    Throughout the year these younger cadets are evaluated based on their attendance and performance at drills, grades in school, community service and advancement in the program.

  • Advice for attending Crab Fest April 30

    The time for Williston’s annual Crab Festival Event is upon us.  The Levy County Sheriff's Office said the event will begin on Saturday, April 30 and will continue into the evening and has offered advice for those who wish to attend or avoid the heavily trafficked area.

    Deputies will be stationed in the event area to assist participants in the event of an emergency.  As always, the deputies’ response time and ability to assist will depend on the size and actions of the crowd. 

  • Pet adoption event May 7

    Levy County Animal Services is holding an adoption event on Saturday, May 7, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Tractor Supply in Chiefland, according to David Weatherford, the department's director.

    There will also be hotdogs and sodas provided for prospective adopters.

    To help more pets fund their fur-ever homes, the Levy County Commission has approved lower fees for the event:

    • Dogs - $40 for males and $55 for females.

    • Cats - $25 for males and $40 for females. 

  • PBS Cake Auction May 6

    Need a dessert for Mother’s Day? CES can help.

    The CES cake auction will be on Friday, May 6.

    Funds raised will go towards the Positive Behavior Support program for students.

    Bidding will start at 8 a.m. and ends at 3 p.m.

    Come see the delicious desserts and place your bid. No worries if you can’t make it up there because they will be posting the cakes on the CES Facebook page.

  • FHP job fair for Troopers

    The Florida Highway Patrol will be opening its doors after regular business hours on Thursday, May 5, for a job fair at the Cross City FHP Station. Anyone interested in a career as a state trooper is urged to visit the station between the hours of 4 and 8 p.m.

  • Old caboose gets moved to new home

    The Levy County Historical Society has turned yet another page in the history of Levy County by purchasing the Atlantic Coast Line caboose located on County Road 326 in Gulf Hammock from a local family.

    After the purchase, Director Toni Collins set about finding out how one moves a caboose from one place to another. The caboose had been located on CR 326 for 14 years. Today it rests on the Gulf Hammock Wild Hog Canoe Race property at U.S. 19/98 and the Waccasassa River.

  • American Legion auction and bake sale May 21

    On Saturday, May 21, American Legion Post 236 of Bronson and the Auxiliary are uniting for a Quarter Auction/Bake Sale as a fundraiser starting at 2:00 p.m. sharp until 3:30 p.m.

    The Levy County Home & Community Educators group meets the third Thursday of the month at 10 a.m. at the UF/IFAS Extension office at 625 N. Hathaway Ave., Bronson. There are no meetings during the summer months. For more information call 352-486-5131.

  • 'Coffee with a Cop' today at McDonald's

    The McDonald's in Chiefland is giving all law enforcement officers free breakfast from 9:30 to 11 a.m. and free coffee or tea for the rest of the day to any law enforcement that stops in the restaurant.

    The event is a thank you to the officers for the work they do and an opportunity for the public to sit and chat with officers over a cup of coffee.
