  • Hurricane can't stop Martin

    Hurricane Irene couldn't stop Tom Martin from competing in the 2011 World Fire and Police Games in New York City.
    With Irene canceling flights up and down the East Coast late last month, the Levy County Sheriff's Office corporal took matters into his own hands. When Martin finished his nightshift on Aug. 27, he jumped into a car with his wife, Sarah, and headed north.

  • Law Appreciation Night honors 8

    If law is what holds civilization together, then it's only civil that society should come together now and then to honor those who protect those laws.
    That was the message Thursday night as six area law enforcement officers, emergency first responders and two good Samaritans were honored at Law Appreciation Night, sponsored by the Chiefland Woman's Club at First Baptist Church of Chiefland.

  • Car chase ends in murder suspect's arrest

    Wednesday evening's rush hour took on new meaning as a murder suspect tore through downtown Williston, running vehicles off the road, hitting speeds of up to 100 mph and going the wrong way up Highway 27,  all the while leading about 20 law enforcement vehicles.

  • Robbery at Tackle Box in Fanning Springs

    A Saturday robbery at the Tackle Box in Fanning Springs might have a clerk questioning the cost of good customer service.
    The clerk, according to the Levy County Sheriff's Office, had just locked the front door to tend to business in the back of the store when he heard someone at the front door. He let the man in and went around the counter to serve him.

  • Chiefland's JV volleyball team undefeated

    After losing the opening game at Dixie County, Chiefland’s junior varsity volleyball team roared back to win the final two sets to remain a perfect 3-0 on the season.

    The team is coached by Tevin Bennett, a 2001 Trenton High graduate who played setter for the Lady Tigers.

    “They played really well tonight,” Bennett said. “They learned a brand new rotation yesterday and still did well. We moved Ashley Davies to libero and that's what changed our rotation.”

  • Indians hit wall

    A few dozen Chiefland faithful applauded and cheered the Indians at the base of the bleachers in Wayne Pridgeon Stadium following Friday's 41-14 loss against Hilliard.

    It was loud. Really loud. But before the game, as players ran onto the field, it wasn't. Neither fans nor players seemed fired up for this one, and the end result was a devastating loss against a team the Indians believed they could've beat.

  • Chiefland's 9-10s secure title trip

    Chiefland’s 9- and 10-year-old football team clinched a spot in the league championship with a 21-14 win against Trenton at Wayne Pridgeon Stadium on Saturday.

    The finals of a league that features teams from the tri-county area will be at 6 p.m. on Oct. 15 in Cross City.

    "It’ll be under the lights, so that’ll be an extra kick for the kids,” said coach Shane Keene.
