  • Community Calendar for the week of May 19


    Legion membership meeting
    American Legion Post 91 will have its regular membership meeting with dinner beginning at 5:30 p.m., followed by the meeting. New officers for 2011-12 will be announced. All members and prospective members are invited. The post is located at 4200 South U.S. Highway 129 between Trenton and Bell next to the FFA Arena.

  • Chiefland star party Friday

       The Chiefland Star Party Group is presenting a telescopic view of the stars and planets at the observation tower at the Withlacoochee Gulf Preserve in Yankeetown at 8:30 p.m.

  • Library loads up on activities

       The Levy County Public Library System is loaded with activities the rest of the month.
       The Luther Callaway Public Library in Chiefland will have a "feelings-themed" preschool program at 11 a.m. on May 23. On the same day, there also will be an after school program with movie and popcorn at the Bronson Public Library at 5 p.m.

  • Man arrested on domestic, child assault charges

    Charles David Keene, 52, of Archer, was arrested after Levy County Sheriff's deputies answered a domestic disturbance call on May 9 at University Oaks subdivision, according to a  Sheriff's Office press release.
    An adult female told a deputy that Keene had been drinking and when he came home they got into a verbal argument. She said Keene picked up a children's bicycle and attempted to throw it at her,  but it missed and instead struck a child, 3,  knocking the child to the ground.

    The Levy County Sheriff’s Office reports the following arrests:
    n May 9, Rebecca J. Alvarado, 35, Trenton, writ of bodily attachment. Bond $1,176.93.
    n May 10, Daniel Luke Arrington, 33, Chiefland, burglary, grand theft, dealing in stolen property. Bond $100,000.
    n May 15, Cody James Blair, 19, Bronson, aggravated stalking. Bond $100,000.
    n May 9, Todd Edgar Bloss, 40, Keystone Heights, no driver’s license. Bond $500.

  • Court dispositions

    The following persons were sentenced, found not guilty or the case nolle pros — dropped — in the Criminal Division of the 8th Circuit Court in Levy County. The information is taken from public records. VOP means violation of probation.
    n Jorge Escobedo Alonso, driving without a license, 60 days with credit for 60 days served; resisting an officer with violence, nolle pros. Must pay civil judgment.

  • Citizens on Patrol

    They are at all the parades, funerals, festivals, public gatherings. They're the folks who look a lot like Levy County Sheriff's deputies, but not quite. They drive official looking sheriff's cruisers with a slightly different paint scheme and have yellow lights on top. 

    They're the silen superheroes of the Sheriff's Office, the Citizens on Patrol. They provide an extra pair of eyes by patrolling neighborhoods. They direct traffic so folks on their way to a big event don't get frazzled.

  • CF Levy Center has $4.8M in state budget

    An appropriation of $4.8 million for the first phase of construction of the Levy Campus of the College of Central Florida is included in the state's Public Education Capital Outlay budget.
    But like a similar $14.8 million appropriation that was vetoed, it faces a possible veto by Gov. Rick Scott.
    CF President Charles Dassance, who announced the good news at a gathering on the new campus Thursday, said residents should keep the school in their prayers, write letters and send emails to Scott in support of the appropriation.

  • Chiefland Rotary wraps up fishing tourney

    With thunderstorms skirting Cedar Key to the north and south, sun shined on the Chiefland Rotary Club’s annual fishing tournament on Saturday.

    Winners were the team of Michael Graham and J.R. Dice for the biggest bag with 19.02 pounds of total fish, the team of John Fisher, Sonya Fisher and Kelby Hudson for the biggest redfish with a 7.33 pound catch and the team of David Stone and Jimmy Ellzey for the biggest trout with a 4.64 pound fish.
