Two emergency orders have been issued declaring a disaster in Levy County due to the continuing drought and high risk of wildfires, and making a burn ban mandatory.
A voluntary burn ban had been issued a week ago. The new order makes open burning a second degree misdemeanor punishable by a fine up to $500 and up to 60 days in jail. It also bans burns not approved by the state Department of Forestry and the sale or use of fireworks in the unincorporated county
The disaster declaration makes the county eligible for federal emergency funds.
