  • Interim Bronson Chamber president wants to pay old debts

    BRONSON - The Bronson Chamber of Commerce is in a rebuilding phase following the exodus of immediate past president Bob Levesque, who is now considered to be "an inactive member" by the new leadership.

    Interim Chamber President Cameron Asbell said the first thing he wants to do is to "get things straightened out financially."

    Asbell said he accepted the position as interim president during the Christmas holiday.

    "I heard that we are $3,000 in debt," Asbell said. "He (Levesque) is supposed to give us a list of who we owe and what is owed."

  • Indians take two of three

    BRONSON –Things didn't start out so great for the Chiefland High boys in the Bronson Holiday Tournament, but Mark Lundy's Indians regrouped and finished strong.

    After getting spanked by Middleburg in its first game, Chiefland came back and won two consolation games to place fifth out of eight teams.

    In Saturday's game for fifth place, the Indians polished off Melbourne-West Shore, 51-44.

    The victory brought Chiefland?s record back to the .500 mark at 7-7.

    Lundy said he was pleased with the effort and improvement his team has shown this season.

  • Gent finishes super year with Owls

    Cortez Gent, a 2005 Chiefland High graduate, finished up an outstanding football season at Florida Atlantic University.

    Gent, a redshirt sophomore wide receiver for the Owls, was instrumental in FAU's finest season ever.

    The Owls finished up 2007 by playing in their first bowl game ever –the New Orleans Bowl. The Owls played Memphis on Friday night, Dec. 22.

    FAU defeated the Tigers, 44-27, to finish with a record of 8-5.

    This was only the seventh year of football at FAU.

  • So this is what going nuts means

    I have almost 200 pounds of black walnuts, some riding shotgun in my car and some weighing down the trunk.

    Problem is, I don't know what to do with them.

    How I came to acquire so many was a bad communication gap.

    Sometime around Thanksgiving, Tom called to say he and future son-in-law Brett were raking leaves and had a difficult time because of all the %^$#! black walnuts.

    "Black walnuts!" I exclaimed. "I would love to have some for baking. Save me some and when I come up Christmas, I'll get them."

  • CPD sergeant stops car by shooting it

    Chiefland Police Sergeant Al Graves Jr. stopped a car that was aimed at his cruiser on Christmas Day by shooting four .45 caliber slugs into it, according to records.

    One slug flattened a tire. One went into the trunk. One slug went into the rear quarter panel above the tire and another round shattered the rear window, CPD Chief Robert Douglas said.

    Graves was driving the second of two cruisers, which were responding to a call for help in regard to a perceived domestic violence attack.

  • NAPA begins scholarship program

    A new $2,000 annual scholarship is scheduled for presentation to a Chiefland High School graduate this year and every year.

    A spokesman for Chiefland NAPA said the company is proud to announce the creation of the Chiefland NAPA Automotive Technologies Scholarship Program.

  • Eagles fall in tourney final

    The Bronson Eagles finished as runners-up in their own Holiday Tournament, after a slow start to beat Umatilla 68-41 and a strong 75-52 win against Middleburg. Facing a tough Dixie County team in the championship round, Bronson could not sustain a slim halftime lead and fell 52-51 after a brutal second half battle.

    "We didn't execute when we needed to, and we couldn't get defensive stops," said Bronson head coach Kelly Beckham.

    "We've got to be prepared to play against a good team like Dixie County – we've got to bring our "A" game."

    Chiefland Citizen's top 15 local sporting events of the year

    1The Chiefland High girls softball team enjoyed its best season ever, making it all the way to a Class 3A State Final 4 appearance in Plant City. Under the guidance of coach Wayne Weatherford, the Lady Indians won the district and region before bowing to Gulliver Prep in the state semifinals. The Lady Indians finished with an eye-opening record of 25-5. Senior pitcher Megan Weatherford was 21-4 and voted 3A Player of the Year. Coach Weatherford was runnerup for 3A Coach of the Year.

  • Homestead Exemption amendment reviewed

    BRONSON - Levy County Property Appraiser Francis Akins recently provided the first of four informational releases to explain a ballot question set for the Jan. 29 election.

    Akins told the Chiefland Rotary Club on Dec. 19 that based on an average of 18 mills, a home valued at or above $75,000 would generate about $188.50 in savings if this proposed revision to the Florida Constitution is approved by voters.

    Akins performed more calculations to show actual savings at current millages for various parts of Levy County for the increased Homestead Exemption amendment.
