  • Report details fracas

    Chiefland High accepts partial blame in last Thursday?s boys basketball fight against visiting Fort White High.

    Players from both teams ?-benches included -got involved in the fracas with 2:01 remaining and Fort White leading 43-41.

    The officials filed their report to the Florida High School Activities Association immediately after the Class 3A District 5 contest was stopped.

    Both Chiefland and Fort White were to file their versions of the incident to FHSAA associate director Denarvise Thornton.

  • P.K. Yonge tops Chiefland boys

    GAINESVILLE -The Chiefland High boys varsity basketball team dropped a 63-26 decision at P.K. Yonge on Tuesday, Jan. 8.

    The Blue Streaks led 44-19 at halftime. A running clock came into play in the third quarter.

    Josh Snodgrass had 14 points in the first quarter for Yonge.

    Chiefland got seven points from Eugene Carter, six from Travis Donald and five from Marquis Jackson.

  • Mitchell new BYL president

    The Bronson Youth League has a new president in Gary Mitchell.

    Mitchell is proud that the youth sports organization is offering basketball for the first time.

    There are 50 kids involved. The first games were played Jan. 5 at Newberry. Mitchell is hoping to have games played in Bronson, although a gym hadn't been secured as of Jan. 7. Mitchell said he would be meeting with the school board to discuss that.

    Meanwhile, registration for Bronson Youth League spring sports is now through Feb. 21.

  • Lady Devils shut out Lady Eagles

    WILLISTON –On senior night for Williston High girls soccer, all the 12th graders played well against visiting Bronson.

    But it was freshman Kayla Carnegie who stole the show with her feather-in-the-hat trick - four goals - in the Lady Devils? 4-0 shutout of the Eagles.

    "Kayla had a great game," said Williston head coach Max Aguirre. "She was in the right place in the right time tonight."

  • Lady Indians improve vs. P.K.

    The Chiefland High girls varsity basketball team dropped a 64-22 decision to talented P.K. Yonge on Friday, Jan. 11.

    Kayelynn Allen led the Lady Indian cause with 10 points and six rebounds. Amye Grieves chipped in with nine points, three assists and three steals. Megan Jernigan contributed seven rebounds.

  • Bronson girls fall to Oak Hall

    BRONSON –Playing in a tough district and refusing to quit, the Bronson High Lady Eagles keep improving, little by little.

    Following a much improved game against Trenton, which the Lady Eagles lost 68-37, they traveled to Oak Hall to play the well-organized maroon Eagles, led by senior Coral Denton.

    Difficulty in scoring consistently and trouble with turnovers led to Bronson's 63-29 downfall to Oak Hall.

  • Scuffle stops Chiefland, Fort White basketball game

    The Chiefland and Fort White boys varsity basketball teams were wrapped up in a tight, competitive district game last Thursday night, Jan. 10.

    The visitors from Columbia clutched on to a two-point lead with 2:01 left, when all a sudden things exploded.

    A push, a punch, more punches, benches emptied, and a full-blown donnybrook ensued.

    When order was finally restored, both teams were sent to their locker rooms, and the referees said enough was enough.

  • Chiefland city manager gets 6 percent raise

    On a motion by Vice Mayor Teresa Barron, seconded by City Commissioner Frank Buie, the Chiefland City Commission gave City Manager Grady Hartzog Sr. a 6 percent salary increase.

    Hartzog's salary goes from $65,000 to $68,900 as a result of the Jan. 14 vote. This followed the commission's rating him at 4.14 out of a possible 5.

    Mayor Teal Pomeroy said this is the highest rating in the two years the commission has rated its city managers.

    Hartzog first took office on Jan. 12, 2007.

  • Andrews sues to define residency

    BRONSON - Andy D. Andrews sued Florida Secretary of State Kurt Browning, Levy County Supervisor of Elections Connie Asbell and Chiefland City Manager Grady Hartzog Sr., all in their official capacities, because he wants to know if he incorrectly registered to vote.

    The case filed Jan. 10 falls on the heels of Eighth Judicial Circuit State Attorney Bill Cervone on Jan. 7 choosing not to prosecute Andrews and 10 others for alleged voter fraud. A circuit court judge in Bronson may decide the definition of "residency" as a Florida voter.

  • Give me light

    I'm SAD. Not the morose, unhappy emotion that many people feel but SAD, as in Seasonal Affective Disorder.

    I have suffered from this problem for as long as I can remember, but it was only 10-12 years ago that I was able to put a name on the feelings, the very real feelings I endure for about six weeks out of every year.

    It's more than winter doldrums. It's more than just a case of melancholia, because even when I don't feel especially depressed, I have absolutely no energy to complete the most simple of everyday tasks.
