  • Indians mop up in First Pitch Tournament

    The Chiefland First Pitch Tournament brought three local schools together for preseason action last week, giving coaches a chance to look at the new rosters in game situations.

    Chiefland High coach Kyle Parnell liked what he saw, as the Indians rolled to a pair of victories.

    On Tuesday, Feb. 5, Chiefland belted Bronson, 11-0. Then on Friday, Feb. 8, the Indians recorded a 9-1 victory over Trenton.

  • CHS football banquet tickets on sale

    We know that high school football might be on the backburner as far as sports headlines go now, but it's time for Chiefland Indian fans to assemble and honor the accomplishments of the 2007 teams.

    The football/cheerleading banquet will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 25, at the Tommy Usher Pineland Center.

    More importantly, the deadline to purchase tickets is this coming Monday, Feb. 18.

  • Harris makes if official, signs with FIU

    Back in September, Joey Harris made a verbal commitment to continue his football career at Florida International University.

    Last Wednesday, Feb. 6, Harris proved that his word is good, as he officially signed a letter of intent to attend FIU, a Division I college located in Miami.

    Harris, who played defensive end and tight end for Chiefland High, was recruited by FIU receivers coach Frank Ponce during spring practice last year.

    Harris hopes to play as a true freshman. FIU plans to use him at tight end.

  • Women's Golf

    The Chiefland Women's Golf Association played the second of three rounds in the Annual Low Gross Ladies Championship.

    After two rounds, Marilee Leonard leads by one stroke. Barbara Ahola is in second place and Patsy Sheppard is in third place in the Championship Flight.

    In the Second Flight, Pat Renaud is leading with a six-stroke advantage over second place Mary Lindsay. Maggie Knapp is a close third place in this flight.

  • Bronson outlasts Oak Hall in semis

    With an incredible defensive performance and timely shooting, Bronson muscled past nemesis Oak Hall Friday night to earn a spot in the district final.

    The 44-40 finish came on a balanced shooting performance by Bronson and a critical shutdown of Oak Hall?s offense in the third quarter.

  • Eagles fall to Hawthorne in district final

    Following Bronson's district semifinal win over Oak Hall, top seeded Hawthorne polished off fourth seeded host Lafayette Mayo for the final matchup Saturday.

    Unfortunately for the Eagles, the Hornets hadn't lost anything since their most recent meeting three weeks ago, won by Hawthorne. The Hornets won the district championship 71-61 in double overtime with the help of sensational shooting by Jimmy Johnson and a war of attrition that saw the Eagles lose the invaluable Kelby Barber with just under two minutes to go in the fourth quarter.

  • County jail pulls plug on use of Bronson sewer

    BRONSON –When most people open a bill and see that the charges are alarmingly high, they usually get on the phone and argue their case.

    Some might get an adjustment, while some might get stuck paying the whole enchilada.

    When the Levy County Sheriff's Department received a monthly water/sewer bill of $10,700 from the Town of Bronson for county jail usage, Major Mike Johnson's jaw dropped.

    The bill is usually half that amount.

  • City spreads dry sludge at new location

    Chiefland City Commissioner unanimously approved on Feb. 11 a five-year contract to spread dry sludge in the area of the county surrounded by the Quincey Cattle Co. on Levy County Road 320 East.

    The contract is contingent on City Attorney Norm Fugate adding a release clause, in case the city gets out of the sludge-spreading business. For instance, if the city found a place to sell its dry sludge rather than paying to spread it on land, then the city would want out of the contract.

  • Crashes happen from fog and smoke on U.S. 19

    Three separate accidents on U.S. Highway 19 happened Saturday morning when vehicles crashed into each other due to zero visibility, according to reports.

    The highway closed from State Road 345, just south of the Gas Mart of Chiefland to SR 24 at Otter Creek from 7:50 a.m. until about 10 a.m., Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Mike Burroughs said.

    There were no injuries in the accidents, although one person suffered from chest pain and was taken to Seven Rivers Hospital in Crystal River, Burroughs said.

    No Fair

    Life is not fair.

    Saturday at about 7:30 a.m., my wife Sharon and I left to go to the Florida State Fair in Tampa.

    I had plans to take photos of award-winning cattle and to have lots of fun.

    I drove our Jeep on Alt. 27 to catch I-75 at Ocala, but it was very foggy.

    I decided to go down U.S. Highway 19 instead, because the traffic would be slower and lighter than on the Interstate.

    Shortly after going through Chiefland on 19, we smelled smoke.
