    Deadline For FAITC Teacher

    Grants Is Oct. 1

    General education teachers who teach pre-kindergarten through 12th grade in Florida are encouraged to apply for Florida Agriculture in the Classroom Inc.’s 2010-11 Teacher Grant program.

    The deadline for applications is October 1. The application and guidelines are on the organization’s web site at www.agtag.org.

  • Chiefland Winn-Dixie offers flu shots

    The Chiefland Winn-Dixie Stores, Inc., will offer flu vaccinations on a walk-in basis and through a vaccine clinic from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 7.

    Customers using their Winn-Dixie Customer Reward Card will receive a $5 discount off the $28 flu vaccine ($23 with the Customer Reward Card). Flu shots are free for most Medicare customers.

    Library Friends board to meet

    The Friends of the Luther Callaway Public Library Board of Directors will hold their monthly meeting at the Library, 104 N.E. 3rd St., Chiefland (a block behind City Hall), at 11 a.m. The Luther Callaway Public Library is the Chiefland Branch of the Levy County Public Library System.   • BBQ fundraiser for Williston FFA

    The Williston FFA chapter will be holding a BBQ Dinner Fundraiser Friday September 17, 2010 prior to the home football game against Chiefland.  The dinner will be served from 5-7pm in the Williston High School cafeteria.  The dinner is only $8 and you can purchase a ticket from any FFA member or call the Agriculture Department at 528-2153.  Walk ins are welcome.

  • State parks to host literacy month events

    Manatee Springs

    The Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Manatee Springs State Park will host a story book reading in celebration of Literacy Month  at 2 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 18, 2009. The park will also host a story book reading of Al Burks' "Mullet Latitudes" by Ranger Matt Meyer  at 1 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 12 and 13, 2010.

  • 10 Students complete Levy Center CNA Course

    The College of Central Florida recognized 10 students who completed the Certified Nursing Assistant program at the Levy Center on Monday, Aug. 30.

    Receiving Certificates of Completion were Tonya Akins, Tracy Allen, Whitley Butler, Stanley Demere, Rosemarie Farrow, Linda Godbolt, Crystal Hamm, Christine Maddin, Jacque Phillips and Pavielle Wiggins.

  • Register Now for October ACT Test

    Registration is now open for the Oct. 23 ACT achievement test. Students who wish to take the college admission and placement exam must register before Sept. 17.

    The ACT is a curriculum-based achievement exam. It tests what students have actually learned in school, not their aptitude for learning. The ACT also measures what students need to know to be ready for first year credit-bearing college courses based on ACT College Readiness Standards. Every student’s results can be tied directly to these consistent standards.

    Interested Participants may enroll in courses in person at the College of Central Florida's Levy Center at 114 Rodgers Blvd in Chiefland, by phone at 352-493-9533 or online at CFItraining.cf.edu (select Levy noncredit classes).

    Computer Fundamentals

    The College of Central Florida Levy Center is accepting enrollment for Computer Fundamentals I, which will be held Sept. 27 through Oct. 18. The four-week introductory class will meet on Mondays from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. The $89 fee includes the textbook.

  • School Health Advisory Council and Wellness meeting

       The first School Health Advisory Council and Wellness meeting for the 2010-2011 school year will take place at 2:50 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 14 in the School Board of Levy County board room, located at 480 Marshburn Drive in Bronson.

       The meeting is open to the public, and the School Health Advisory Council and District Wellness Team are always looking for new participants.

       The purpose of the meeting will be to review the current Wellness Plan, Safe and Drug Free Schools Programs, and Health policies.
