  • Sheriff's Reports

    Officers with the Levy County Sheriff's Office recently arrested the following people. All people in the United States are presumed innocent of crimes until they are proved guilty in a court of law.

    * Zachary Allen Baggett, 16, of Bronson was arrested March 1 for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, grand theft auto, theft, two counts of grand theft, armed burglary and three counts of burglary. The name of a juvenile charged with a felony in Florida can be published.

    * Wendy Barnhill, 35, of Williston was arrested March 1 for disorderly intoxication. Bond $500.

  • Open House at the Lower Suwannee Wildlife Refuge

    The Lower Suwannee & Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuges open house and Friends annual meeting was recently held at the Lower Suwannee Refuge's headquarters.

    Manager of the Refuges, John Kasbohm kicked off the day by welcoming the Friends and visitors of the refuge.

    Jay Bushnell, president of the Friends of the refuges announced many projects and new developments that are in the works or coming soon. Among those mentioned is the new Forestry Office that now finally furnishes adequate space at the refuge.

  • Being heart smart

    February may have come and gone, but the facts remain: every month should be Heart Month-especially if you're a woman.

    Television commercials, print ads and even soap operas got in on the month-long message that women need to be more aware of their hearts.

    And that's not the figurative heart that we give away on Valentine's Day.

    Heart disease is now the leading cause of death among women in this country.

    The reason? It's unclear.

  • Levy celebrates Black History Month

    It's all about the power of choice-and discovering that power through education.

    That was the resounding theme Saturday night as members of the community came together to celebrate and participate in the 10th annual Black History Month banquet .

    Monica Scott, a 2000 graduate of Chiefland High School and a recipient of a Black History Committee Scholarship, was keynote speaker for the evening.

  • Bronson considers fire department merger

    In this corner you have more money, more equipment and a lower ISO rating.

    In the other corner you have insurance liability, territory and details, details, details.

    That was the scene Monday night as Bronson's town council listened to the beginnings of what may be a merger between its fire department and the now seemingly defunct fire department in Otter Creek.

    Rick Lombardo, Bronson's fire chief, presented a draft of an agreement that could start the ball rolling toward combining the fire departments.

  • Chiefland celebrates FFA Week

    Heather Rucker and her ag students recently held their 5th annual petting zoo as part of National FFA Week. Chiefland Elementary school's kindergarten students took a walking field trip to participate in the program set up for them at the middle school's ag property.

    "We do it for the kindergarteners. In two years I'll have the original group. Then I'll get to see if those kids are interested in ag and how many remember that day and what they went through and see if they've learned anything," Rucker said,

  • New $2.9 million transfer station opens

    BRONSON - Levy County taxpayers netted $300,000 in savings with the opening of a new transfer station at the landfill east of Bronson, according to information released March 4 at the County Commission meeting.

    Project Manager Andrew Wellman of Peter Brown Construction said the close-out of this project reflects the saving and changes the $3.2 million project into a $2.9 million project.

  • Levy fire departments on new radios now

    As of Feb. 28, all 14 fire departments in Levy County are on the new radio system, according to information released at the March 4 County Commission meeting.

    Now that the radios are being used, a monthly fee begins. The provider, Williams Communication, is waiving the fee until April.

    Dick Tummond, assistant to the county coordinator, requested $12,264 from the county to pay the monthly per-unit fee for 143 radios for the months of April through September. Commissioners voted 4-0 to authorize the payment, which pays the fee through the end of the current fiscal year.
